( Lori's P.O.V.)
Rick and I spent the whole night by Carl's side again, and in the morning when Hershel came to check on him, he told us that Carl's fever was gone.
" Do you two mind visitors?" Carol asked from the doorway. " Sophia wants to see Carol."
I looked at Hershel.
" He'll be fine." Hershel assured me.
Sophia climbed into bed with Carl and hugged him, kissing him on the cheek when she broke off the hug.
" Ew." Carl said while Rick and I watched them.
" Does it still hurt?" Sophia asked.
" Just a little."
" I hope it doesn't leave to much of a scar."
" Why? Do you not like scars?"
" I don't know. I guess I would like them."
" Dani's pack with the body." T-Dog said, appearing at the doorway.
( Five minutes later)
" Blessed be God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ," The well dressed Hershel started. " Praise be to him for the gift of our brother Otis. For his span of years, for his abundance in character. Otis gave his life to save a child's, now more than ever, out most precious asset. We thank you, God, for the piece he enjoys in your embrace. He died as he lived, in grace. Shane, Dani, will you speak for Otis?"
We walked up to where Hershel was, and Dani started. " I do not believe in God, nor do I believe Otis deserved what he got. I could tell that he was deeply sorry for what had happened, and I believed he should have come back in one piece to see that Carl made it out. I'm going to go out tonight and find the monsters who did this, for your sake, and for mine. In the time I knew him, he was a nice, thoughtful person. He will be missed."
" She said what I was thinking." Shane said after Dani was finished.
Everyone helped collect rocks to make a make-shift gravestone. Afterward, Maggie went inside for a few minutes and came back out with the county's survey map so we could see the surrounding area.
" Will grid the whole area, and get teams together to search for supplies, gather wood, water, everything, and anything." Rick said.
" Not you, not today," Hershel said. " You gave three units of blood."
" I wasn't planning to." I told him.
" Sure you weren't."
" There's a pharmacy a mile down the road, few blocks into town," Maggie pointed out. " The sick are probably long gone, hopefully."
" Sick? You're kidding me, right?" Shane asked.
" Everyone has their beliefs, Shane." Dani corrected him. " I'll go with Shane. Knowing you guys think that way, we'll try to not kill them."
" Much appreciated." Hershel said.
" Your welcome. While we're gone, you guys need to start fixing that fence. Now, I get you guy might not see them as a threat, but we do. Our people are less prone to kill them if they know they're not going to get any closer. Is that alright?"
Hershel nodded. " I would say no firearms on the property, but knowing there are people out there that are a threat to us, you may keep them."
" We usually don't shoot them, loud sounds just draw them in. I'm surprised a herd of them wasn't drawn in by Otis's gunshot."
" Miss, what's the water situation here?" Dale asked.
" Got five wells on our land," Maggie started. " House draws directly from well number one, number two wells, over there, we use it for the cattle, but it's just as pure. Take what you need. There is a cart and containers inside the generator shed behind the house."
" Thank you." Dale said, then left, T-Dog behind him.
" I'll scout out with your girl, see if we can get a dear or somethin'." Daryl said, walking up.
" Fine by me, just try to get back before dark."
" You ain't my Mama!" He said, started to walk away.
I grinned as I kissed Lucy and she caught up with him no problem.
" Shane and I are gonna head out. Look's like we have the water situation under control. We'll be back before dark."
" WE'VE GOT A PROBLEM!" Dale yelled from well number two.
" What?!" Rick asked.
" THEIR'S A WALKER IN IT!"
