Lucas' POV
The dance of war begins. My wolf letting out his anger. Anger directed at me, yet his teeth and claws are directed at them. Swiping at necks as he blurs past.
He no longer cares whether they are innocent or not. Whether they are juvenile wolves or not. Not even looking at their faces anymore.
Pulse racing. Heart rate increasing.
He pays no attention to me. He just makes them bleed. To death. Yet that blood taints my palms. Their death clings onto my conscience. Their pleads and cries fall dead on his ears. Yet every sound plays in my head like a heart wrenching love song on repeat in a heartbroken man's head.
Adrenaline pumps through us. Yet fear and sorrow flow out of me. How do I explain to him? Will he ever forgive me? Will he stop this process of becoming a killing machine?
He continues his lap across the grounds. But there is no one left in his range. All painting a canvas on these grounds. Abstract.
The powerful stench of death clinging to these pack grounds. Clinging to my wolf. Clinging to my soul.
He continues his hunt. Looking for new prey. His driving force helps him find his new group to punish. He lets all his pain out. All in the form of lifeless bodies. Lifeless wolves. Everywhere.
Does he even understand the pain that I am going through?
He continues on his little killing spree. Paying no heed to me. My begging does not make a difference to him. I am afraid that he will leave no one alive.
I have already spoken to Ian. He understands my predicament.
We are to use it to our advantage. He will have his rightful place in this pack. He will lead this pack to greater things. Together we will move forward.
He has called on a meeting with whoever is left of the current pack. Excluding me. He understands that my wolf and I have some unfinished business. Some stuff to sort out.
The scavengers have already started to shroud the dead. Eating at them. Greedily chewing down the lifeless. The people that were supposed to be a part of this pack but died at the paws of my wolf.
My wolf has finally cooled down. He has began to see things in my perspective. But he is too late in seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. For my hands have already been stained with their blood.
The crowd finally make their way back. Ian leading the pack. Perhaps be has taken his place as the Alpha of the pack.
The few wolves together with our rogue wolves drop down to their knees. The vulnerable part of their necks pointing towards their new leader in submission.
Robert's son, looks on in defeat. He had hoped to lead these wolves someday. Norman like his father lacks skill, lacks intelligence and lacks the strength. Something that we have.
His parents look angry and afraid. They should be. For we will be like them and have no mercy. But we will work rationally. Slowly. Calmly.
Perhaps they have come to know that I am the mate of their daughters. I call the shots now. Not them. They have no say.
My attention is caught by the little pawn chained to a steel pole. Silver chains cling to her bony wrists.
Blood seeps through the wounds that litter her body. Old and new mingled together. All forming different pathways along her body.
She's the image of weakness yet strength right now. They can physically chain her but can't chain her mind, her heart or her soul.
Once again there is a strange compulsion to save her. To rescue her from all of this. If only for my mother.
But how do I save a woman who does not want to be saved by anyone? Who is an image of strength and independence and who desires to be her own saviour?
She reminds me so much of my mother. There are so many similarities. Yet so many differences.
The pack will begin the old tradition of running with their new leader soon. Yet no one let's her free. No one let's her be a part of it all.
I want to be the one to set her free. But how do I go against my wolf?
Do I really have it in me to touch another when I have just found my mates? Can I really do that? Can't I at least do this much for the woman who brought me into this world? Who died trying to protect me from my mate's family.
The wolves stand behind their new leader. Their Alpha. Our Alpha. All of them ready to lead this tradition forward.
We sprint across the grounds. The pack is far behind Ian and I. We continue launching ourselves forward. Faster and faster. Pushing ourselves.
Ian scenting his lands. Making sure that all the neighbouring wolves know their boundaries. Covering the bastard's scent.
The run goes on for hours. Wolves hunting along the way. Sharing a huge chunk of it with their Alpha.
The pack lands are beautiful beautiful. The forest; scary but peaceful. The little rivers flowing in between, dragging life along with it. It almost seems as if life has returned to this pack.
"I want you to be my second in charge, Luke. Be my Beta."
"I am pretty sure that the pack already takes you as my Beta. You deserve this. You've fought this with me, beside me. Please say yes" he adds.
He's never begged me for anything. He's never begged anyone. Yet here he stands before me, asking me to be his second in charge.
Words are unable to form with all the emotions that I feel. I am unable to say that I will be there for him, fight by his side. I am unable to say yes. YES, I will be your Beta.
I simply nod my head. I can't look into his eyes right now. Perhaps with this win of ours, I am one step closer to the little, caring boy he once was.
The run back to the pack house is tiring. Maybe my emotions have been getting the best of me. Today has been one emotional day for my wolf and I.
I am the first to arrive to the pack house. It's a great feeling to have a pack house to return to. Now that I have experienced this, I don't ever want to leave it behind.
The pack house has a certain kind of charm to it. Dark oakwood floors line the house. Pretty, soft lighting hanging inside the house.
But there are hundreds of skeletons hiding in these closets.
The view from my window is magnificent. The moon casting the spotlight through. The beauty of it almost sending me into a trance.
And for a long moment, I wallow in her beauty.
It was almost impossible to pull my eyes away from her. But what I find when I pull my eyes away, makes my stomach sink.
