(I wasn't that good at writing the first few chapters, but I promise it gets way better.)
It should have been him.
He should have died. Not Cathrine. Cathrine.
He should have sacrificed himself, he should have threw himself between Cath and Peter as he swung the axe.
He held her body his shaking hands. Her skin was cold to the touch, her face was lifeless. Hot tears rolled down his face, dripping down to her body. Hatta walked up to him and put his hand on Jest's shoulder. Jest didn't look up. "Jest... I think we should get going." Hatta said, barely above a whisper. "No. Leave me here with her." Jest voice was shaking, he didn't care. Nothing mattered now.
Hatta slowly helped Jest up, Jest putting all his weight down so he could be hard to pick up. Hatta still managed to put him up on his feet, and they both started waking toward the forest. They walked in total silence, although, Hatta was muttering things under his breath.
He was probably already going Mad.
Hatta left to his hat shop, leaving Jest walking alone to Hearts. He then arrived at Cathrine's house; he was about to knock on the door, but he decided to just leave a note. Her parents would freak if they saw him. They Hated him.
He left a note on the floor in front of the door, and he knocked. After he knocked, he jumped onto the branch of a tree and he waited. It took a few seconds, but finally, cathrine's mother opened the door. She looked outside both ways, and looked down; she picked up the piece of paper on the ground and read it. She immediately dropped to the ground. He heard her screams and her weeping. Her husband came to her, and she threw him the note and she pounded on the floor. Her husband went pale after reading the note and he kneeled on the ground and tried to comfort his wife. Her screams echoed through his mind.
He then went to the Castle, and requested to the guards to see the king. Jest was escorted into the throne room, and the guards threw his carelessly on the ground in front of the king. The king was on his throne, picking at his nails and he looked at Jest. His eyes widened.
" J- Jest? Is that y- you?" The Kings voice cracked. " Oh Jest! I thought you were D-Dead." The king exclaimed. "well no, I'm not." Jest said emotionless. The king clapped his hands and jump up from his chair. "Oh Jest! How I've missed you. I always—"
"She is dead. " Jest said, interrupting him. The king stopped midway and froze.
"What?" The king questioned. "Cathrine is Dead. I- I was there, I saw it. I should have saved her, I should have..." Jest stopped talking, he couldn't hold it in. Tears rolled down his cheek, his cheek stained from the kohl. The king looked at Jest and adjusted his shirt. 'What? What do you mean? Im-impossible.... that's impossible. This is just a silly little prank, yes! Oh, Jest you shouldn't joke about-....' The king's smile faltered when he saw no evidence of this being a laughing matter or just some silly joke. His heart dropped. "W-what happened?"
It took a few moments for Jest to finally speak, "She went to save her friend and... Peter....he... if only I saved her in time..." He paused as he held in a sob. The King was in a panic, "th-then we must do something! I'll call in the soldiers-"
"No, it's no use. She's long gone...I..held her head in my hands-" Jest fell to the ground as hot tears poured out. The king stood still, unable to move, to speak. He grew pale and his breath was rapid.
"Oh, I see. T-thank you Jest f-for telling me. Now if you'll excuse me, I n-need to make preparations then." The king walked out of the throne room. He Went up to his chambers and locked the door. He lay on his bed, crying.
The echo of cries and screams filled Jest's mind. He replayed the scene in his head. Cathrine, killed by the axe. How it sliced through her. How the warm blood splattered on him. Jest dug his hand into his scalp, trying to forget the memory. Trying to forget Cathrine. He couldn't. Instead, he tried to think of her beauty. He thought of her perfect hair falling on her face as she held the sword in her hands. Her bright eyes always glistened even in the darkest of nights.
Still lost in his thoughts, Raven appeared and flew down on his shoulder, digging his claws into Jest. Raven hasn't spoken in riddles since Cathrine's death.
Jest started to walk toward the forest again, with a song that kept ringing in his head:
Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater,
Had a wife but couldn't keep her;
He put her in a pumpkin shell
And there he kept her very well.
Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater,
Had a pet and couldn't feed her;
Caught a maid who hadn't meant well—
What became of her, no one can tell.
Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater...
