Just Breathe

Chapter 30

Emma sat, tapping her pencil on the desk. It was already four o'clock, and she was still trapped in detention. It hadn't been her fault really, because Isaac had been the one texting Derek in chemistry class about the plan for tonight. Mr. Harris had really let him have it, so when Emma intervened telling him someone was sick at home, Mr. Harris had Emma take his place in detention.

So she sat, waiting for this to be all over, hoping that she would make the concert in time, considering it started in an hour and a half. She had already finished all her homework so now she just sat thinking, her mind filled with worry. For starters, Peter was in the hospital. He was very sick which was odd considering he was a werewolf. Emma wasn't too fond of him, no one really was, but he was one of Derek's last remaining relatives, meaning she had to care.

But besides that, this morning had gone well. Derek was finally home and seemed to be feeling a little better. Everyone was still sad, grieving over their lost friend, but it was getting better and that was all she could ask for.

Emma stretched, letting out a loud sigh. Eventually her head found its way to the desk as she fell into a much needed sleep.

"Ms. Ray!" Mr. Harris shouted, Emma jolting up. Confusion muddled her thoughts, not even realizing she had fallen asleep. Her eyes found the clock, a smile on her face as it was already six. "Have a nice nap?" he taunted her, Emma nodding in response. She didn't have time for his attitude. "Well it looks like you can go now" he told her, a pout on his face.

"Thanks" Emma said as she slung her bag over her shoulder, offering him a quick smile before rushing out of the classroom. Spotting Derek, Scott and Stiles at the end of the hallway, she paused, offering them a wave before she began to speed walk down the hall.

"Emma!" Ms. Blake called her from her classroom, Emma coming to a halt. A sigh escaped her as she turned to look into her classroom. "Can I talk to you for a minute? I have one of your essays!" Ms. Blake explained, Emma nodding before giving her friends a signal that let them know she'd only be a minute. 

"Yes" Emma said as she entered the classroom, watching Ms. Blake pulling open a drawer where her essay laid. She smiled up at Emma, placing her paper down on the desk.

"You had the highest grade on this paper in the class. You have a very good vocabulary. I'm very proud" she said, Emma's eyes going wide. 

Emma was shocked, a smile coming across her face as her heart beat for pride. It felt so good to receive praise for her intelligence when in the super natural world, it usually doesn't help at all. "Thank you Ms. Blake" Emma breathed in disbelief, staring at the high mark that lay on her paper.

"No, thank you for paying attention in class. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get ready for the concert. Congratulations Emma, good work!" she said, offering Emma a stunning smile as she rose to her feet. She reached across the desk, placing her hand on her arm as she offered a squeeze.

Then she hustled out of the room, shutting the door behind her. Emma's eyes went wide, her breathing becoming labored as her eyes shifted to green. Memories, memories were flying through her mind as her muscles began to shake. The wind picked up around the room, the desk flying against the door, blocking it. 

Images ran through her mind. Jennifer being attacked by the alpha pack as she was an emissary. Jennifer regaining power from the tree stump, the nematon. She saw Jennifer killing her parents for a sacrifice, among many other innocent people. She saw Jennifer having sex with Derek. She saw everything. Emma dropped to the ground as anger began to take over, the room shaking.

"Hey where's Emma? There's Ms. Blake. Wasn't that who she was with?" Scott said, watching his teacher jog through the hallway. Scott's eyebrows furrowed as he watched a smile come over Derek's face, along with a wave. "You two know each other?" Scott asked, Derek's eyes going wide.
