Araceli's POV
Friday ."Hola mamacita!" I heard from across the street as I walked up my driveway.
"Hi Spooky." I turned back smiling and waving at him.
"Maya!" I yelled for my sister walking in the house. "Hello?"
"What Celi?" She came down the hall with her hair in her hands.
"You look cute sis! Where you going?" I smiled, "And I was gonna see if you could take me somewhere."
"I'm going over to the Santos party tonight." She overlooked her appearance in the mirror. "And to where? Why do I have to take you when you have your license?"
"Because it's your car, and you never let me drive even though I'm almost 17, and clearly a better driver than you are." I rolled my eyes.
"Where you going?" She turned asking me, and I gave her a small smile not answering, "Ohh, no no no no. You're not going into the Prophets territory. Are you loca?"
"Maybe a little." I smiled at her. "Just for an hour."
"No, it's not happening. If you wanna go somewhere get dressed and you'll go to the party with me." She grabbed her shirt going back to her room.
"Why? Why can't I go?" I yelled.
"Do I need to remind you of who your father was? A Santos who was in charge. And do I need to remind you of who killed both of our parents? We're lucky that we're still alive" She came down the hall yelling at me. "You're really stupid if you think I'll let you go over there, and also do I need to remind you of what dad did to me when I was with a Prophet? Leave them alone."
"Okay, I'll drop it." I said pushing past her going to my room.
I shut the door and locked it; going to grab my keepsake box from under my bed pulling out a picture of our parents, and began to cry. I can't believe it's been 2 years since they were taken.
"Lo Siento mija." She came back to my door standing outside.
"It's okay. I'll be ready in a minute." I stated going to my closet picking out some shorts and a crop top.
"Just come over. I'm leaving." She stated as I heard her footsteps fade down the hall.
I sighed getting dressed running my fingers through my hair. I mean I'll get to see Spooky, so I guess it's worth it. I smiled to myself.
I walked outside looking across the street seeing the Christmas lights lit up in the backyard turning to lock the door I heard footsteps behind me.
"Hermosa." Butterflies fluttered in my stomach hearing his rough but soft voice.
"Hi Spooky." I took a deep breath before turning around.
"Why you not at the party?" He questioned as I turned to sit on our porch swing.
"Had other plans, but Maya pretty much canceled them." I rolled my eyes.
"With who?" He took a sip of his beer studying my body language.
I shifted a little before answering him, "I'm not in your business, so stay out of mine."
"Feisty. I like it." He smirked making my heart skip a beat.
Spooky, or should I say Oscar, and I had a unique relationship. Yes, he's older by 4 years, me only being 2 years older than Ceaser. I've always gotten the sense that he cared for me more than just a friend, but he's never made a move and I know it's because of my age.
"Whatever." I shook my head.
"She's only trying to protect you, you know?" He stared out into the dark street. "Like I do, because I promised your dad."
"Why don't you look after Maya like you look after me?" I asked him.
"Not my type." He chuckled. "But you know your dad would be pissed just think about when Maya..."
"I know." I cut him off. "Can't go a day without someone telling me that, but can I ask you something?"
"Just did." He lit his cigarette coming to sit by me. "I'm kidding, what's up?"
Right before I was able to form the words a gun shot rang out from the party, "Get down." Spooky said through gritted teeth.
"Celi." I heard someone yelling, and then I heard footsteps running up the driveway. "Oscar have you seen Celi? It's Maya."
I stood up not knowing what to do, and ran across the street through the crowd to the backyard. I saw her lying on the ground clutching her stomach.
"It's going to be okay babygirl." I caressed her face taking off my jacket pressing it to her wound.
"It hurts mija." She groaned in pain.
"I'll be back Maya, don't let go okay?" I got up turning to Mario, "Stay with her and make sure she stays with me."
I looked at my watch running back to my house, 9:26 PM, I unlocked the door running to my room grabbing my box. I opened it taking out the picture, and my dads old rosary. I turned around seeing Oscar in the doorframe.
"We'll find them, okay?" I nodded brushing past him meeting the ambulance as it pulled up. I jumped inside once they lifted Maya in.
"Ma'am, we can't...." the paramedic began.
"I'm going, This is my only family." I sat down placing the rosary in her hands.
"Ay dios mio." I looked at her.
3 HOURS LATER
She was still in surgery, and I was still here alone. I was angry because no matter what went on when I needed someone the most Oscar was there, and this time he wasn't.
"Family of Maya Mendoza." The Doctor came out, and I immediately got up, "She's doing fine, we were barely able to get the bullet out safely. She's currently in ICU we'll allow visitors tomorrow for now she needs rest, and so do you mija."
I sighed deeply of relief, "Thank you, and can you make sure she gets this?" I handed him the rosary.
