I shook myself free from Victor's grasp and looked to the left and into the woods. Sure enough, I saw flashlight beams swishing around from left to right.
Looking for us.
I looked over to Alex and Evanora and they saw it too. We were out in the open on the road. There was nowhere to run and we were definitely trapped.
Before I could get a word out of my mouth a shout rang out and gunshot soon followed. We shrieked and ducked.
"Run!" Alex yelled out. We didn't need to be warned twice.
The pounding of feet soon followed the sound of ours and I pushed myself to run faster. Shot after shot rang out behind us and my heart skipped a beat at each one.
Suddenly, the sound of an engine revving had me turning around despite my better judgment. My eyes widened as I saw motorcycles gaining on us. "Holy shit!" I cried out. Alex shoved at me, a signal to keep running.
Evanora cried out as a bullet lodged itself in the ground beside her but I noticed it wasn't a bullet at all. It was a tranquilizer dart. I looked away and told myself to keep running.
One of the motorcycles drove up beside me and the passenger cocked his gun, prepared to shoot. Suddenly, the wheel caught on fire and the motorcycle spun out of control, tossing the two riders off and into the forest.
I shot Alex a grateful look and he nodded back. "We need to get out of the open. As long as they have room, they're going to keep on chasing us. In the woods, there are obstacles keeping them from using their vehicles. Let's take advantage of it."
I nodded at him and we all ran off into the forest. Alex and Evanora stayed at the rear, since they were the only two who's powers were still in commission and we needed cover. The men's confused cries rang out behind us as we continued to sprint deeper into the woods.
Victor stumbled and I helped him steady himself. I looked down and winced as I saw the blood leaking from his abdomen. He looked up at me with a pained smile. "I've had worse." I could tell he was lying but I chuckled anyway and he gave me a small shove and I ran.
Alex yelped as a blade was tossed at the tree beside him. "Fuck! They have throwing knives!" He exclaimed with a voice crack.
I grabbed the hood of his hoodie and shoved him as the sound of footsteps gained on us. Evanora thrust her arms out behind her and something rippled behind us. I couldn't tell what is was until a few hunters rushed into it and floated into the air. A zero gravity field.
I smirked at her and she grinned in return. Suddenly she cried out in pain and fell to the ground. "Evanora!" I yelled as I skidded to a halt and tried to turn back for her.
"No! Don't!" She winced. I saw a knife embedded in the back of her leg and gasped, kneeling down beside her. "Circe...go!"
"No! I...I won't..." I said. "I can't leave you!" I tried to help her up, but she cried out in hurt and collapsed again.
"Circe, I can't move! If you stay here you'll die! I'll be fine, okay, go!" She urged again.
"No! It's fine! You can make it! You can-"
"Circe I'm going to slow you down! I can't walk okay?!?" She exclaimed, slightly angered.
I stared at her for a moment as she sobbed softly. "I can't walk. You're not going to make it with me. You guys just need to go."
I choked out a sob and wrapped my arms around her in a rushed, anguished hug. She wrapped her arms around me in return and tears slid down my cheeks as I stood up.
"I'll be fine." She urged once more. Before I had time to respond, Alex grabbed my wrist and yanked me along with him.
And I was forced to leaveEvanora behind.
