I heard the murmurs before anyone did anything. Quick words like 'freak', 'monster', and 'Elementalist' were the most common.
Alex grabbed my hand in his and gently tugged. "We have to go." He said. I sort of stumbled behind him, my brain moving faster than my legs. I was an Elementalist. One of the beings that were most hated in the world. I was one of them.
I heard one of the teachers mutter, "Get the rest kids to safety and call the EH. The rest of you, detain that girl." I didn't need to look back. Alex whipped around, ushering me behind him protectively.
"Back up!" He exclaimed, holding his hands out threateningly, "I don't want to hurt you all."
"Son, we're going to have to ask you to step away for the Elementalist." One of the teachers said.
Alex's eyes began to glow red. "I'm warning you all one more time. Get back."
My eyes widened as I realized that what I saw at the party wasn't a drug induced hallucination. That friction wasn't what had given Caleb second degree burns.
It was Alex.
The teachers, however, continued to creep towards us. Alex sighed and rolled his eyes as if this was the most annoying thing to happen all day. Then he trust out his hands and a wall of flames shot up between us and the teachers. Their shocked and fearful cries rang out from behind it.
"There goes my A in Trig. He muttered, grabbing my arm and dragging me along with him."Let's go. That wall won't last forever and we have to get out of here before the EH arrive."
"But where are we going?" I asked as I ran behind him.
"Anywhere!"
Suddenly red lights began to flash and sirens blared over the loudspeaker. "Attention students. We're going into lockdown so that your local EH system can hunt down and apprehend the Elementalist escapees among you. Please remain in your current classes and await further instruction. " The automated female voice called.
Alex cursed under his breath as the sound of footsteps approached. He looked around desperately for a way to escape. "There!" I called, pointing towards a class with an opened door. We rushed inside and Alex shut the door, peering into the hall through the window on the door and ducking when the group of men walked by.
"God we have to get out of here!" He muttered. I rushed over to the window and gasped, ducking down when I saw the mass amount of police cars past it.
Alex quickly rushed over and shut the curtains. "They probably have the whole school surrounded like that." I muttered to myself. Alex nodded and began to shuffle around the room, probably looking for something to use to escape
I noticed that we were in the Chem. Room. I walked over to the chemical shelf and began to search for something that might've been of some help. Alex rushed back over to the door to peer out the window and gasped. He ran over to me and shoved me in the supply closet. I knew that he'd probably seen someone coming so I kept silent.
Someone bean to pound on the door. "NYDEH. Open up!" They yelled. Though it was pretty dark, I could see Alex clearly as he placed a finger on his lips as to tell me to not make a sound.
A loud boom resounded through the room and I jumped as I realized they'd kicked down the door. The sound of multiple sets of boots echoed through the room as they began to search. "Don't leave ANYTHING untouched." One man yelled in a booming voice. Alex shoved me deeper into the closet and I saw his eyes widen slightly as we saw a shadow pass by the door. I squeezed his hand, just the slightest bit, and he looked back at me, smiling in a reassuring way.
But I could tell that even he was unsure of making it out of this alive.
The door was yanked open and Alex shoved me behind him as we came face to face with a rather buff man who was covered head to toe in protective gear. As soon as he noticed us, he aimed his gun at us.
"Step out of the closet NOW!" He yelled, gaining the attention of his fellow officers.
Alex grabbed my hand in his and stepped out of the closet.
"Let go of the girl's hand!" The officer stated. Alex did as he was told, releasing my hand and casting me a glance. The officer quickly rushed over and grabbed me, keeping Alex at gunpoint.
"Now, put your hands in the air."He stated, handing me over to another officer. I didn't fight back because Lord knows that getting shot was the last thing I wanted.
Alex slowly raised his hands above his head and the officer approached him with caution. "Get on the ground!" He commanded.
I expected Alex to follow through with the order, but instead his eyes began to glow that blood red shade again and his raised hands became engulfed in flames.
"Fuck! Code red! Pyrokenetic! I repeat! Pyrokenetic! Open fire!"
A hand grabbed my wrist and yanked me back and I cried out as the man in front raised his gun to shoot at Alex.
But Alex held up his hands and the man caught on fire. Literal fire.
I don't think I'll ever forget his pained screams or the way he rolled around on the floor in vain.
Before the other men had time to react, Alex shot a column of fire at the wall and it spread throughout the entire room. Every self, poster, loose piece of paper, and backpack caught on fire as the inferno spread.
The men began to descend into chaos yelling out codes and each other's names. I felt myself being dragged out of the room by my captor and I began to wheeze and cough form the smoke exposure.
Alex's red eyes landed on me and I saw his fingers twitch before a wall of fire blocked the door, trapping us all in the burning room.
I felt the cool barrel of the gun on my temple."Stop right there or I'll shoot this bitch!" The man yelled.
Alex's eyes narrowed and the gun caught on fire causing the man to yelp and drop it quickly. "Don't ever call her a bitch again." He said. The flames seemed to get hotter and slowly shifted from red to white. "Now let her go or I'll make sure that when you all burn, it'll be slow and painful." As if to prove a point, some beakers on the self behind the men exploded, sending chemicals flying and sizzling in the flames. The grip of the man holding me grew tight and I yelled out in pain.
Suddenly a gurgling sound was heard behind me. Like someone choking on water
But when the person holding me fell down beside me with a pitch black spear protruding from his chest, I knew it wasn't water he was choking on.
It was his own blood.
And I'd just been the one to kill him.
I gasped and scrambled over to Alex as the spear disappeared. But the body was still there.
And the pool of blood beneath him was still expanding.
The remaining the remaining four men stared at us with fear in their eyes.
Alex voice was nothing more than a muffled mummer in the background as I stared at the body of that man. When his hands grabbed my wrist and tugged me along with him towards the window, I didn't object.
The men were still frozen in fear as we leapt out of the window and dodged the raining bullets behind us.
And I didn't blame them.
We were outcasts.
We were murderers.
We were monsters.
