Alex and I had managed to find a rather comfortable alleyway that was not only hidden from sight, but lacked the vulgar stench and trash of most alleys. Alex gave off a significant amount of body heat on his own, so in order to keep warm, I stayed huddled up to him the whole night. He offered to take first watch, but I woke up once only to find him sleeping soundly. I didn't disturb him because I figured he needed a little time to relax as well so I fell right back asleep.
As the rays of morning sun caressed my face, I found myself stretching and yawning, the last remnants of sleep clouding my already hazy thoughts .The vague sound of Alex's sleepy mumbles drew a smile to my face. I'd probably just woken him up.
Suddenly, an arm around my throat had me gasping for air. I clawed at the person's arm, but they refused to release me. "I'd suggest you stop fighting girl, unless you want your friend's brains over here to decorate the ground." A gruff voice called.
I was able to turn my head just enough to see Alex half unconscious on the ground with a swollen black eye and a busted lip. A gasp left my lips as I realized that those weren't sleepy mumbles that I'd heard.
They were groans of pain.
"ALEX!" I exclaimed as my attacker's accomplice held a handgun up to his head. He looked up at me with a pained wince and my eyes widened.
"I wonder how much the EH department would pay to see you two at their doorstep." The first man chuckled. He grabbed fistful of my hair and yanked back so hard, I heard my own neck crack.
"You know, you little Pyrokinetic boyfriend was actually pretty easy to take down. All it took was a little water and a couple of punches and he was out like a light." The second man chimed. "He refused to tell us what you were though."
I felt myself stiffen as I heard the gun cock. "So tell us sweetie, what type of Elementalist are you?"
I had no clue how I was supposed to answer. Should I be truthful and say I don't know, or should I just make up a power. But if I made up a power, what if they asked me to demonstrate? Then they'd know I was lying and shoot Alex on the spot. But what if they shot Alex because they thought I was lying when I said I didn't know? I didn't like the feeling of having the fate of someone else's life in your hands, especially when that someone meant a lot to you.
He tightened his arm around my throat and I found myself gasping for air. "Answer our question, girl."
"I don't know. I- I don't know for sure. I just d-discovered them yesterday."
"Bullshit."
A shot rang out, followed by Alex's cry of pain. The man yanked my head over to look and I found myself letting out a shaky half gasp-half crying noise.
They'd shot Alex in the leg.
They actually SHOT him.
"Are you going to tell the truth now?" He demanded.
Alex's green eyes were wide with pain and he tried his best not to let out another sound, but the silent tears that flowed down his cheeks betrayed him.
"I don't know my powers okay, just stop! J-just leave him alone! PLEASE!" I begged and I felt my own eyes water.
I let out a pained yell as the first man yanked my head once more. "You know what, how about we just kill him? Right here, right now."
"NO!"
"Then are you going to tell us what your abilities are?"
"I said I don't know! Please just let us go!"
"Tell us what you are!"
"Stop it!"
"TELL US WHAT YOU ARE!"
