Chapter Twenty Three:
When they returned, Steve questioned them on why they had came back so soon, and why they had an extra person with them. Hazel decided not to answer, but introduce them to Peter once again.
"Mr Rogers." Peter said walking up to him, "I mean Mr America— Wait no, Steve? No, no, I mean Mr Rogers."
Steve chuckled and shook his hand, "Queens."
Peter's face turned a light shade of red as he shifted himself back next to her. "And you know that's Bucky." She pointed at the man slowly making his way towards the group. Carol was still behind them, it seemed she decided she was also going to stay a bit longer.
"I told them they could stay for dinner." Hazel declared, "Is that alright?"
Steve placed his hands on his hips, "I didn't realize we were having dinner. I'm just kidding." He chuckled to himself, Hazel and Peter shared a look. "We can order something. Is everyone ok with pizza?"
"I am." Bucky spoke up, "Haven't had it in decades."
Peter's eyes widened, "You— you haven't had pizza in how long?"
"You haven't had it in five years either, buddy." Hazel looked up at him, "You're missing out."
He rolled his eyes, "Yeah, that's way to long."
Steve sighed, giving them the both a look before walking over to a side table in the living room and picking up the phone. Bucky was still watching Peter, Hazel chuckled pulling on his sweater.
"Wanna go on the roof?"
"You can do that?"
"What do you—" she trailed off shaking her head, "Yes, you can."
He nodded and they began walking to the front door before he stopped, pulling his wallet from his pocket. He turned, fumbling with a ten dollar bill as he rushed through the living room and held it out to Steve.
"It's all I have on me." Peter said nervously, waiting for Steve to take the money.
Steve laughed, shaking his head. "No, it's on me."
"But—"
"Go hang out with Hazel, Pete."
Peter nodded slowly, leading himself back to Hazel and out the door. When they entered the stairwell he exhaled, "Did Captain America just call me Pete?"
Hazel nodded, "Yes he did. But has he ever called you Hazelnut because he was trying to be 'hip' with the nicknames?"
They took the stairs two at a time, Peter snorting. "Hazelnut?"
"Mmhm."
This was nice, she thought. They were almost back to normal, as if the long gap in time hadn't existed between them. Yet she was waiting for something to light up, letting her know that they had both changed. She had no idea where he had been during that time, and he had no idea what she had been doing. Nothing would ever be able to go back to normal without one problem, and she was worried it would pop up in the worst time.
It was cloudy when they exited onto the roof, and she could feel rain spitting down. The roof had a garden with winding paths to the edges where a few benches and picnic tables were placed. The plants and flowers in the garden were blooming, and the smell was very strong. Hazel walked down one path and leaned against the railing at the edge, looking down at traffic. She climbed up and slipped her legs under the rail, sitting on the ledge.
"Aren't you afraid you're gonna fall?" Peter asked leaning against the rod iron.
"No."
"Oh yah, I forgot you can just summon up some wind and cushion the fall." He chuckled, "Have you ever tried flying?"
