"That's the thing Amy. We need one of your kidneys." He finally said.
"What? Why? How?" They looked at each other again. "Can you guys stop doing that? It's getting creepy."
He nodded. "You're the only one that can donate to him. You're the only one healthy enough to be his donor." My mom finally spoke.
"What do you mean by I'm the only one healthy enough? Aren't you healthy too? You guys are confusing me." At this point, I was loosing it.
"That's the thing Amy. Your mom isn't a match and I'm sick. I can't donate to him." My dad whispered like there was someone spying on us.
"What do you mean by you're sick. I'm tired of you guys using big words. Just go straight to the point please."
"Amaka calm down! Let him speak." I huffed and leaned back.
"I am HIV positive. It'll be a bad idea for me to donate to your brother."
"Wow. Things just got a lot more interesting. So that's the reason you guys separated? Because of your HIV status? When did you know about this? You know what? I don't want to know. It seems like I'm the last person to know about things in this house. I'll see you guys later. I'm tired." I got up, took my bag and left for my room.
I got to my room, locked my door and undressed. I didn't even know what I was feeling at that particular moment. I went into the bathroom and had a cold shower. As the water trickled down my body, I began to think about everything that has happened for the past few years. How my parents always argued, I always felt maybe they fell out of love or something.
I remember the day they told Ebube and I about their divorce. I felt a rush of emotions that day. We begged and pleaded with them. I always knew dad was a serial cheat, at least, he had the decency to tell mom about his HIV status.
I finished having my bath, dried my body, wore a fresh set of clothes and sat on my bed. Apparently, I was the only one that could donate my kidney to Ebube but the only problem is I'm pregnant and I've to tell my parents sooner or later.I was too caught up thinking that I didn't know when I slept off.
I felt the sun shining down on my face, making it impossibly for me to sleep. I opened one of my eyes and immediately shut it. I winced at the pain, sat up and rubbed my forehead. I opened my eyes to see my mom looking down at me.
"Good morning mom." I said with my awardly thick morning voice.
"Morning love. You are not going to school today. We are going out. I need some alone time with you. Go have your bath and come down for breakfast. You skipped dinner last night." She said, pecking my forehead before leaving my room.
I groaned and mumbled as I made my way to my bathroom. I turned on the shower and relaxed as the cold water helped to relax my muscles.
I got out of the shower, walked to my closet and took a white polo and blue jeans. The jeans was a little bit tight. I wore my clothes and picked a black canvas from my shoe rack.
I took my phone from the chair in my room and walked out the room. I got to the kitchen and found my parents gisting and laughing like old times.
"Good morning dad." I said, pecking his cheek. I felt my mom's eyes drilling holes in my face. I walked to the kitchen cabinet and took my plate of jollof rice. I sat down at one end of the table.
"You people should continue your gist now. Don't worry, I won't eavesdrop." I chuckled and brought out my ear piece while my parents continued talking.
I took one bottled water from the fridge and finished everything under seconds. My thirst for water has obviously increased rapidly.
After about twenty minutes, we all left the house in my mom's car. Our first stop was the gaming center. I remember how we always went there together; all four of us. We all played different games. Most times we did it as a competition. After about an hour, I became very hungry and I told my parents I wanted to get something to eat. My mom eyed me warily while she brought out money from her purse after plenty begging.
I went to the restaurant at the ground floor. I ordered starch and Banga soup. I love starch and Banga. After eating, I paid for another bottle of water and went to meet my parents at the games center.
After about ten minutes, we left for the movies. We decided on the one showing at that moment and we got into the theatre.
By the end of the day, I was exhausted and tired. I posted the pictures I took with my parents on my WhatsApp status. We got home around 5. I went to my room to have my bath, and wore a more comfortable cloth. I went to the kitchen and met my mom preparing dinner. I joined her in slicing the tomatoes.
"Amy. So how was your day?" I smiled, dropped the knife and turned to face her.
"It was nice. Like this has been the nicest day ever. I just wished it wouldn't end. And I liked seeing dad making you smile. It made me happy." She was also grinning from ear to ear.
"I was happy too my love, but I can't get back together with your father. If HIV was curable, then I would have taken him back for both your sake and Ebube's." I nodded and she continued. "I really love hanging out with you. I think we should do this more often."
"Yes we should." I said , biting my lips. I took the knife and continued slicing the tomatoes.
"Is it me? Or are you adding weight? Your hips are larger. I noticed them in your jeans today." She eyed me suspiciously.
"Mummy you ehn. I eat a lot now, that's why I'm adding. I think I'll start going to the gym self. You've yabbed me enough." I said, feigning anger.
"See her mouth. A lazy person wants to start working out. I want to really see how it'll end for you oh." I giggled and walked out of the kitchen.
After dinner, I went to my room to brush my teeth and get ready for bed. Since tomorrow was Saturday, I didn't have issues with rest.
My Saturdays are usually the same, I wake up, help my mom out in the kitchen, clean the kitchen, take my mom and I's laundry to the laundry room. I put them in the washing machine, spin and dry them, then I go and have my bath, eat and then sleep till I become hungry or my mom decides to wake me up.
I was selecting a set of pajamas from my closet when I heard a scream. I flung the clothes to my bed and I ran out of my room to see what was going on.
