Song: One love by Bob Marley.
Dedicated to all those affected by the xenophobic attacks.
I felt the bed sinking and springing back up.
"Wake up! Wake up!" I opened my eyes to see Maeve jumping happily on the bed. I cleaned my eyes, yawning and stood up. I looked for the clock and the time was 7:44pm.The room was filled with snacks, drinks and food. My tummy growled instantly as if on cue.
"Where did Simi and Ava go to?" I said, taking a bar of Snickers from the table.
"Simi went to get a charger from my mom, while Ava is using the restroom." I nodded. "So the show is going to start in about ten minutes. I really want to do something fun." I smiled at her. Maeve was a really sweet girl but she always gets on my nerves. Well, everyone gets on my nerves.
As soon as the other two came back to the room, Maeve turned on all the cameras and our 24 hours reality show kicked in. We started with an eating competition first.
"Okay so I'm going to time you guys, the first person to finish their plate of noodles, wins a bar of Snickers." Ava said and I scoffed.
"You're really pathetic. Just snickers. If I win, give me your phone." I said, grinning.
"You're not serious. Ready? Go!!" She shouted and we immediately started swallowing a plate full of noodles.
It was pepper ish and sweet. I was literally swallowing the noodles and it was fun doing so. I finished almost as soon as I started. I dropped the plate on the center table and laughed.
"I won suckers! So where's my phone?" I opened my palm to Ava. She rolled her eyes and hissed.
"Remind me never to do an eating competition with a pregnant woman." Maeve muttered under her breath.
"I heard you." I sang and went into the bathroom to wash my hands. After drying my hands, I took a bottle of Eva water on the table and gulped nearly half of it.
"There's this movie I want us to watch; The Hustle. I heard it's nice, let's just watch it." Ava said, transferring the movie to Maeve's laptop. We positioned ourselves on the bed as we all got ready to be entertained.
The movie was funny, interesting and really not predictable. You know all those kind of movies where you feel like you know what's going to happen next? Yeah, it wasn't like that. After everything, we decided to do a little hide and seek game.
"You're it!" Maeve screamed as she tapped me.
"How am I it? Not fair." I left the bed and went to hide in the hallway.
We spent an hour or two playing hide and seek before we decided to eat and then sleep. I was already fighting with the sleep.
We woke up as early as 6 the next day to continue our quest for an entertaining reality show. We played games, ate, slept, played 40 questions, pranked ourselves. It was already time for us to edit the videos and put them all together.
Maeve and Ava were the pros so we allowed them to do their work.
"How are you feeling today?" I said, asking Simi.
"I'm okay at least. I just feel really hungry and I want to eat pizza." I chuckled.
"Your never dying love for pizza. Now that you mentioned it, I think I would like to try it too. I haven't really eaten pizza since I got pregnant self. At least, it's not too spicy right?" She nodded and opened her Instagram. We went through people's pages together, read the comment sections, followed celebrity gossip and latest movies.
By the time we were done, Ava and Maeve were already done with the edits, we watched the videos and laughed at some of the funny moments. Maeve uploaded it and j went to look for something to eat. I was really hungry. I got to the kitchen and saw Maeve's mom talking to one of the cooks.
"Good evening ma." I greeted, smiling.
"Good evening love. How are you?" She asked, returning my smile.
"I'm okay but really hungry." She served me and began to gist with me about her childhood with my mom. How they always got into trouble together, got suspended from school together too.
"I didn't know my mom was a rebel oh. She's always forming goody too shoes." I said, laughing together with Maeve's mom.
"Your mom always liked having fun. There was never a dull moment with her and she was very social. Everyone knew her." I chuckled. I finished the last of my spaghetti and drank water.
"Thank you ma. I really appreciate." She smiled and nodded.
"I'm so happy you found Maeve. She has been happier these few weeks. I'm happy you guys are getting along well. I can tell she really adores you." I smiled and dropped my plate in the kitchen, before going to look for Maeve and the rest.
I got to the room and saw the three of them sleeping on themselves. I laughed and created space on the bed and slept too.
It was finally Tuesday and my appointment was in the afternoon, so I had about five hours to waste. Maeve and the girls insisted on following me to the clinic and I didn't even have the strength to object. After having breakfast, we all sat down in the parlor to watch the news with her mom.
The xenophobic attacks in South Africa was really a thing of concern. Everyone was talking about it. Videos were on the internet, pictures and everything were going viral. News casters were pronouncing their profound pain. Nigerians cried with heavy hearts. The videos we saw were too cruel to be beheld.
After a while, we left the parlor for the room. We decided to see a movie and we all chose The Set Up. It was one of the best Nigerian movies I had ever watched. It lasted for nearly two hours. After the movie, I ate my food, had my bath and dressed up for my appointment.
I wrote this chapter, nearly crying. I know it isn't long or anything but these xenophobic attacks really got to me. It was really painful seeing those pictures and watching videos of my brothers and sisters being burnt like goats or shot like animals, both innocent and guilty. They're killing Nigerians in sa for reasons best known to them... My condolences goes to the families that are affected by this crisis. Please spread the word. We can't continue like this.
