Dances weren't their forte. Despite this, Beilah, Jeremy, Michael, and Spencer all attended Prom, partially because their parents pushed for it heavily and partially because it was their Senior year. Regardless of the reason, there they all were.
They all wore adorably corresponding outfits to match with their partner. It was kind of sickening to look at, but all of their outfits were cool, so they decided to give themselves a free pass for being cheesy. Besides, they looked amazing in their prom photos.
Beilah wore a beautiful gown. The skirt was a little past knee length, the pattern showing a glorious swirl of blues and greys with bursts of yellows and oranges across it. It was very clearly made to mimic Starry Night by Da Vinci. The bodice of the dress was a dark shade of periwinkle with white and black markings similar to windows across the waistline.
Jeremy went as Beilah's alien counterpart. He wore black slacks, a white button-up, a deep grey vest, and a long brown coat. This was all topped off by a Starry Night bowtie and a fez perches atop his head. Although it was a mismatched mess of different styles, he pulled it off perfectly, and somehow looked very much like The Doctor.
Michael wore a Pac-Man tuxedo paired with a dark red button-up shirt and an adorable Pac-Man tie that Spencer had made from him out of some scrap fabric he had. The tuxedo was black with a blue maze pattern covering it. Filling the maze were several Pac-Men, ghosts, and pellets and they couldn't help but think it did a fairly impressive job of mimicking the game.
Spencer was dressed in black slacks and a white button-down shirt that he paired with his galaxy bowtie and suspenders. Overtop of this, he wore a Space Invaders tuxedo jacket decorated with the Space Invader aliens and ships as well as swirls of galaxy patterns across it.
Amazing outfits aside, the four friends had a completely incredible night.
It started off somewhat awkward and stiff, with all of them milling about their table as music blared deafeningly in the background and couples went back and forth between ravenously grinding on one another and partaking in the fun activities held at the prom.
Eventually, though, they started getting involved in what was actually happening. Rich dragged them onto the dance floor where they awkwardly floundered for a few songs. The night really kicked off, though, when Cotton-Eyed Joe started playing. It was a terrible song, really, but they knew the dance to it and had a fun time making themselves look like fools. The flailed around like morons as they danced along to the song, finally relaxing enough to let go and enjoy themselves.
They ended up taking a break from the dances when Spencer's shoe slipped off and went flying into the crowd as they danced to The Cupid Shuffle. It was a complete mess and it took them a solid ten minutes to find it- which was due at least in part to them all laughing too hard.
Finally, the found his shoe and sat down at their table, all out of breath and panting. It wasn't a surprise to any of them that they were winded- they'd been dancing for almost an hour and all of them were fairly out of shape.
After they got their breath back, they decided to take some pictures. They spent a decent amount of time posing in the picture booth with stupid props and such. The line to the photobooth was incredibly long each time, but they went into the photobooth about four or five times, regardless- it was worth it.
During the last run through the photobooth, Michael boldly turned to Spencer and kissed him, timing it perfectly. As they stepped out of the booth and collected the pictures they saw that the picture had perfectly captured the moment. Spencer flushed while Jeremy and Beilah chuckled, teasing them.
It wasn't long before everyone silenced. Everyone looked up towards the podium, waiting for the speaker to continue, "We will now be announcing the Prom king and Queen!"
The crowd roared appreciatively, going silent moments after. Excited anticipation hung in the air alongside the silence as they waited for the names to be called out.
"Who do you think'll win?" Spencer asked.
"My money's on Jake and Chloe," Jeremy suggested, "They're the most popular two in school."
"I think Brooke and Rich will." Beilah disagreed.
"Aw, yeah!" Spencer grinned, nodding, "They're such an adorable couple. They'll totally win."
Their debate was cut short by the speaker finally actually announcing the two names. She unfolded the envelope eyes scanning over the paper before looking out to the crowd, a faking a cheesy smile as she spoke, "For Prom King... Jeremiah Heere."
Confused cheers erupted through the group. No one- not even those who rooted for the underdogs- expected Jeremy to win. He just wasn't the kind of person who would. Regardless, most everyone in the crowd cheered for his victory.
Jeremy's face flushed a bright red as he stumbled through the crowd up to the podium, encouraged to move by shoves from the audience. He could feel himself sweating. He stood on the stage, awkwardly smiling and waving as she read off the name of the queen.
"As for our Queen... Beilah Wesolowski!"
More confused cheers.
An equally confused (but also incredibly excited) Beilah heading up to join her boyfriend on stage. They both stood on the stage, Jeremy completely flustered, and Beilah with a dorky, excited grin on her face.
"Now, our King and Queen will lead us in the final dance of the night."
Another wave of loud cheers filled the air before slowly tapering out as the sweet melody of a slow song began to flow through the speakers. Jeremy and beilah were ushered to the front of the dance floor. They both awkwardly hesitated for a few moments before Beilah shrugged and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
Jeremy's face heated up further as he brought his hands to rest on beilah's waist, pulling her closer as he did so. He rested his head on her shoulder, letting his eyes peacefully slip closed as they swayed back and forth to the music.
Beilah leaned into Jeremy's chest, pressing her ear up against where his heart was. She closed her eyes, letting the beat of his heart guide her movements. The tension in her shoulders completely fell away. She melted into his arms.
They swayed in perfect sync to one another (though it was far from perfect compared to the music).
Spencer and Michael grinned over to Jenna, giving her a thumbs-up. So, maybe they had rigged the ballot, but it had all been in good reason! Beilah and Jeremy deserved to win and were an adorable couple! They didn't win much. They deserved this. And their friends were happy to make sure they got what they deserved.
