NICK'S POV

I always had a sense for trouble. Anytime there was trouble going on near me or around me, I recognized it quickly.

And this felt like trouble.

It was supposed to be an average day, my Beta Alex and I were on a run through the woods training.

The cool breeze swept against my pitch-black fur as my wolf moved so rapidly through the forest.

It was a beautiful day. The temperature was nice, the sun was out. But something still didn't seem right.

My heart was beating through my chest as we ran, dodging tree after tree.

I signaled to Alex to stop, and soon after shifted into my human form, him following.

"Something feels wrong." I told him. I sniffed the air carefully and tried to pick up any traces. The only scents I got were unrecognizable.

"Why do you say that?" Alex raised an eyebrow.

"Trust me, there's something weird going on here," I nodded, continuing to scan the area.

Then I saw it, a small moving dot that kept getting bigger and closer.

It was a person.

A girl. And she was running.

I quickly moved myself to block her path and used her momentum against her when she reached me to slam her against a tree.

"Please don't hurt me!" she panted, trying to catch her breath.

She had striking green eyes and long golden hair. Her face was visibly smooth even though it was covered in dirt and blood, and her lips were soft and luscious despite being dehydrated. When I looked into her eyes I instantly knew.

My mate.

Her eyes closed and her body fell lifelessly to the damp forest soil. Had she fainted?

"What the hell?" Alex barked.

"She's my mate," I said instantly. "I finally found her."

"Why is your mate running through the woods passing out?!" He exclaimed.

"I told you something felt off!" I growled, cradling her body up into my arms. "We have to get her to the pack doctor. Then we'll find out what this all is."

Alex nodded, following behind me as I carried the girl back to the pack house.

When we entered the house I could tell the other pack members on the first floor were sniffing her, and their eyes rested upon her like she was some sort of ghost. A couple whispered to each other as we walked past, but all I could focus on was getting her to a doctor.

Finally we got to medical on the third floor, and my mate got her own private room. I waved Alex off and was left alone with my mate while the doctor ran off to grab her chart.

She looked so peaceful, for someone who was strapped up to a heart monitor and had an IV stuck in her arm.

"What is it?" I asked sternly when the doctor came back.

"The surge of adrenaline from her run overworked her body. She'll be okay after she rests, she should be awake by tomorrow." she said, holding a stethoscope to my mate's heart.

"And Alpha," she turned to me. "She's human."

My mate was a human?

After hours of watching and waiting for her to wake up, I decided it was best to return to my room and go to bed. I'd be back first thing in the morning.

I couldn't fall asleep. I felt restless and thoughts of all the possibilities flooded my mind. Why was she running? What if she didn't wake up? She was human?

It continued like this for the rest of the night until the sun rose and I was able to pull myself out of bed to go visit her.
