"Despite the impression you're under, I don't kill women, Evanora." Nick stated, kind of disgusted with the idea.

"No. You just force them out of your pack territory because you're threatened by powers." she rolled her eyes.

"My sister lived in your territory when you passed that law. And when you kicked her out, she had nowhere to go. She got hit by a truck searching for a new place to live. I could be wrong, but I don't really think that would have happened if you let her keep her home." Evanora looked like she was in pain thinking about it.

I turned to Nick.

"What law?" I asked him.

"I passed a law a couple of years ago after a few incidents that those who practiced magic had to leave Dark Forest territory." he sighed.

"Incidents?" I asked. Evanora was staring off.

"There were pack members getting involved in spells and voodoo instead of contributing, and the pack was overpopulated, it just worked conveniently." he said. He looked like he felt genuinely sick over what he'd just found out.

"My sister never involved your pack members in 'voodoo'. But honestly, it doesn't even fucking matter anymore," her eyes welled up with tears and she looked away.

"There are no spells to bring her back. There are only spells to numb my pain. And unfortunately for you, not even those are completely effective." Evanora stood up and walked inside, closing the door behind her.

"We should go," Nick said uneasily.

"Listen, I'm gonna try one more time. Please just wait in the car, I know I can get through to her." I pleaded. Nick shrugged and nodded, heading back towards the car.

I didn't knock this time. I just tried speaking to her.

"Evanora," I started, my voice just loud enough for her to be able to hear it through the door.

"I'm really, really sorry for your loss. I sent Nick back to the car, but he had no idea. I know it's probably not easy for you to believe but if he would have known that your sister's death would come of the law he passed he wouldn't have passed it." I sighed.

"I'm sorry for coming here, for bothering you. I wouldn't do it if I had any other option. If you don't want to help that's fair enough, but I wouldn't forgive myself if I left here without telling you why I did it." I felt my voice get shaky. I hated this, I was scared of what would happen if she said no.

Then the door opened, slowly this time.

"Oh my god, just come in." she threw her hands up after an awkward pause.

"Thank you," I said, trying not to sound surprised.

The inside of the house was the opposite of the outside: everything was white, at least in the main room. I took a seat on a plushy chair and Evanora sat across from me, giving an "I'm waiting" look.

"Earlier this year I was kidnapped by a group of rogue wolves and held hostage for months. They gave us barely edible food and forced us to fight each other. And the ones that didn't win the fight got sent to be sex objects. I was the only one who figured a way out." I sighed.

Evanora did not look like she had an ounce of pity for me. And honestly, that was okay. She didn't need to.

"After I escaped and recovered I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing the ringleader was still out there doing it to other defenseless humans. So I snuck away to find him. And I did." I looked towards the floor.

She was leaning her head ever so slightly to the right, her face still dead emotionless.

"And I..." I felt my throat close, not allowing me to continue. I had to take a deep breath.

"I killed him. And it felt like the right thing. But what I didn't know is that he had a lot more rogues that looked up to him than just the group I experienced. They're targeting me, and I can't fight their guns with a knife. I just need someone who knows dark magic." I sighed, running a hand through my hair.

Evanora didn't speak. She furrowed her eyebrows and pursed her lips looking away from me, thinking.

"I know Nick made a horrible mistake. But I'm fighting for my life here." My voice broke.

"Don't cry in my house please," she raised an eyebrow and looked me up and down.

I gave her a questioning look, I genuinely wanted to know if she was being serious.

"Every time I walk into my living room I'll think about the time that wolf girl cried in here." she looked disgusted.

"Okay, god, I won't." I sniffled and calmed myself down.

"So are you going to help me or not, Evanora?" I sighed, looking at her desperately.

She looked me up and down, biting her cheek.

"I don't want him involved whatsoever." she crossed her arms.

"He doesn't have to be," I said, knowing that was going to be an issue for Nick.

"I mean it. I'll teach you how to defeat them but you have to swear he won't come anywhere near the magic. I don't trust him at all." she said.

"I promise." I said.

"Then you'll have to stay here and he'll have to go home." she said.

"What?" I panicked. Nick and I had just mated, I was definitely not ready to be separated from him.

"I can't be that far away from him, there has to be another way." I said.

"Well," Evanora chuckled, "Clearly your mate doesn't let magic enter his pack territory. So what's your idea?" she raised an eyebrow.

"He'll make an exception. Trust me, I can have a private area arranged for you to teach me without his supervision." I said. I really hoped she went for it, because I didn't know what to do if we didn't leave here with her.

She seemed unsure, but strangely willing.

"If you pack your things right now I can go talk to Nick about it." I said. She snorted laughing quickly after.

"I can get there on my own terms. Take my number and let me know when to come." she tore a piece of napkin off of her coffee table and wrote a series of digits on it, handing it to me.

Then she pushed me out the door and slammed it behind me. Classy.

When I got back to the car Nick looked confused.

"So?" he asked, expectantly.

"She said she'll teach me how to defeat them. But she doesn't want you involved, she wants to have a private area back in our pack to show me everything without interference." I said.

"What?" Nick shook his head.

I didn't know what to do so I scratched my neck awkwardly.
