Chapter Fourteen
Niall POV
“Do you really think this is a good idea,” Lilly asked me as I locked Benjamin in the cellar. He had agreed to tell us everything he knows in exchange for rescuing his family from Cauious. Funny how things changed so quickly, but I still had to make it seem real just in case Cauious was around watching us.
“Do you have anything else in mind,” I asked as I crossed my arms over my chest. “Because if you do, I would love to hear it.”
She rolled her eyes, smiling as we began to walk up the stairs to the main floor. “So, how are you and Hanna,” she asked me, clearly interested in how my love life was fairing.
“You’re quite nosey today,” I teased.
“No,” she lied. “I just really wanna know. Are you at least happy?”
Was I happy? I couldn’t hide the fact that I hadn’t been really thinking much about Hanna since Lilly came back; she’s been occupying most of my mind and I hated it. I also hated what I was doing with Hanna and how I’ve been avoiding her. I just didn’t know how to explain that the mother of my adult child was now back to life and that we were destined to be together. It sounded crazy in my head, so it must’ve sounded worse spoken out loud.
“I am.” Fuck, my voice faltered.
“You don’t seem so sure.” Busted.
“It’s… complicated.”
“Niall,” she said as she turned to face me, both of us standing in the middle of the entrance way. “You know you can tell me anything. We’ve basically been- were together for a whole year. I know everything there is to know about you. I’m not going to get butt hurt if you actually were happy without me.”
I sighed. “I was happy with her. It was like… it was like she filled the hole that you created and left. She was good with Andy, she wasn’t afraid of me and I felt like I could honestly be myself around her. I was back to being how I was since you left. And then…”
“I come back and everything is ruined.”
“No, not ruined,” I say, reaching for her hand. “I’m just… very confused at the moment.” Did I want to explain everything to her? Did I want to tell her how I imagine holding her at night? That I want to feel her lips on mine again to feel the spark that would always ensue after? How I wanted to caress her cheek and feel her heartbeat on my bare chest as my fingertips raked down her exposed spine? All of those things I knew I could have with Hanna, it’s just that I didn’t want to. At least, not with her anymore. And that’s what was troubling me.
“I understand,” she said as she smiled at me, although it didn’t reach her eyes. I was hurting her and I knew that, just like how I was hurting Hanna at the moment.
“Niall?” Speak of the fucking devil. I turned around, hearing Hanna coming up the front steps. But she wasn’t alone. My heart quickened. “Niall, what’s going on?”
She came through the front door, Jillian behind her.
“Really? You had to go after my girlfriend?”
“I’m not really sure she’s much of that anymore.”
I looked over at Hanna who mirrored my same expression, pain. “You told her.”
“I didn’t really have to. Once her powers awakened, she knew all that she needed to. All I had to do was confirm it.”
“What is your purpose here,” I finally asked, getting fed up. “Why are you here?”
