...It'd been a little over a month since the last time Clementine had felt whole. The last time she felt this lonely was when Lee died—and with AJ getting along with the other children, going to school and well, being a kid. It made the hours drag on.
Currently it was nearing the afternoon, and Clementine was sat on the couch of her home, marking off the days until she was due. She had about two more months.
She marked the makeshift calendar in red pencil, whilst trying to soothe the rather active baby inside her. Who hadn't let her sleep all night. With the constant kicking and stretching—Clementine pondered for a moment, sitting on the couch she looked up at the coffee table. Where Kate had left a small pile of children's books.
The top book was AJ's favorite: 'Goodnight moon'.
"It's worth a shot," Clementine sighs, reaching forward and plucking the edge of the cardboard book until it spun her way; she retrieves it with a victorious smirk.
Clementine sets the book atop her stomach, flipping it open; she began softly. Feeling as if she had all eyes on her for a second.
"In the great green room," she starts, feeling a little silly; surely the baby wouldn't understand a word—but there was something therapeutic about this. "There was a telephone—and a red balloon,"
"And a picture of a cow jumping over the moon," Clementine laughs a little, being reminded of the way AJ giggled at the idea of a cow jumping over the moon.
To her surprise, the rumbling in her tummy ceased to small ripples, as if the unborn baby was in fact listening; mesmerized by her mother's voice.
...
The sky shimmered, keeping Louis awake as he lazily steered the horse back toward Richmond, The Delta hadn't made any moves as of yet and Louis and Gabe needed more supplies; despite Gabe's failed attempt at ruining his and Clementine's marriage, Louis still wanted a form of acquaintance, if they had to depend on each other. He didn't want any bad blood.
The eerie sound of the dark wilderness bored him, making it difficult not to fall asleep; the only sound keeping him going was the soft whisper of water nearby.
"The moon is pretty big tonight," Louis mentions, breaking nature's muse. Gabe was at his side, and briefly glances up at the stark white moon above—barely any clouds to accompany it. "Reminds me of this book, my mom used to read me,"
He never mentioned his past, Gabe noticed. And felt obligated to reply. "What's it called?"
"Goodnight moon," Louis says with a smile. Gabe forced one back—"ever heard of it?"
"No," Gabe shakes his head, looking over at Louis again. "Then again, it seems like a life ago. I can't remember a time before this shit,"
"Can't let those memories die," Louis says under his breath, they continue down the path, the chatter of crickets were drowned out by Louis's words. "You'll forget the point of living,"
There was a few beats of silence before Louis began again.
"I don't remember the entire book, but I remember a few of my favorite lines," he says. "Goodnight room," he says with a second thought. "Goodnight light..." he pauses, seeming a little sad now–"and Goodnight moon,"
