Everything Will Be Fine

I woke up in my bed. My bed. My heart sank when I automatically turned to see Freddie but of course he was on the other side of the world. All I remember from getting home is arriving back at school and then going in my dads car back here. I must have fallen asleep on the way back, and he must have carried me in. I'm exhausted, emotional, and hungry.

I went downstairs and got myself some breakfast. Cheese on toast was my choice, like it always is. I sat on the kitchen counter and began to eat. My mum came in and gave me a big cuddle.

"Honey I've missed you so much" she said

"Missed you too mum" I squeezed her back

"Your dad had to get to work so it's just me and you today" She smiled

"Alright" I said before finishing my last bite of the cheesy toast

"I'll take that" mum picked up my plate and took it over to the sink

"Mum" I got her attention

"Yes dear" She smiled

"I-I need to tell y-you something" I gave her a serious look. No looking back now.

"What is it dear?" She walked over to me looking slightly worried

"The trip, it was great. I think I've fallen in love Mum. With my exchange." I couldn't give her eye contact so I peered down at the floor

"Say it" she said softly

"I'm gay mum" I looked at her this time, I don't know where the sudden confidence came from

"Good for you honey!" She wrapped her arms around me again, "you must tell me all about him, and your trip!"

"You're not angry?" I quizzed

"Just because you love a boy doesn't change you Johnny dear" She put her fingers through my puffy hair

"Thanks" I grinned

"And I can tell he makes you happy. So go on, tell me!" Mum sat down at the old wooden chair and I stayed seated on the counter with my legs hanging over the edge

"He's called Freddie. He isn't actually from India, he's from Zanzibar. He is a little bit older and about the same height as me. His hair is dark and perfect and his smile brightens the world! Freddie is so caring and his hugs are so comforting." I smiled at the thought of him, "You know what the best think is though mum?" I asked

"What dear?" She smiled broadly

"He loves me too" I said with the biggest smile on my face

"I can't wait to meet your beautiful boyfriend" My mum clapped in excitement

"He really is amazing" I swooned

Me and mum went and sat down in the living room. She turned the telly on with one hand as the other hand held her mug of coffee.

"Darling, what would you like for your birthday?" She turned to me

I completely forgot! My 16th birthday is next week. Maybe it's jet lag or maybe it just because I'm so caught up in my emotions.

"Uh, a camera. Then when Freddie comes over I can take loads of photos" I brought my legs up onto the sofa so I could rest more comfortably

"That's a great idea" Mum placed her hand on my calf

I sighed contently.

"I'm scared of telling dad about me and Freddie" I blurted out

"I know he will be fine with it" Mum said

"How do you know?" I snappily questioned

"Remember Uncle Tony?" My asked

"Yeah" He was my uncle, my dads brother. He died a while ago in a motorcycle accident, I must have only been 8 when it happened

"He was gay. He just wasn't very open about it. Dad accepted and loved him the very same as before he came out, maybe even more" Mum explained

"I didn't realise" I brought my head back and looked up at the ceiling

"Not many people knew. He never had a boyfriend though, he was too scared to ask men out" Mum sighed in reflection

"I see" I mumbled

"But you don't have to be scared dear. Everything will be fine" Mum said

"I suppose" I yawned

"Get some sleep" Mum said softly

I snuggled down on to the sofa and began to dream of Freddie. He was running out of the airport and leaped into my arms. We were flying. Spinning in the sky. I didn't let go, I couldn't, we were fixed together like we should be.
