Trust Me

It was now day 5 of Freddie staying over here in England. Yesterday we just lounged about and cleared up from the night before - the sleepover. Brian and Roger were mortified that they were both drawn on in the night. Roger had big glasses and devil horns on his forehead, Brian had a monocle and a biker moustache. You should have seen their faces when they looked at each other. They laughed at each other and then realised that they were being laughed at themselves. Brilliant. Of course, Freddie was absolutely thrilled. He's never going to let Roger and Brian forget that moment.

"John, can I speak to you?" Dad called into the living room where me and Freddie were having a movie night cuddled under blankets. The curtains were shut and the lights were off - my living room was transformed to a homely cinema.

"Yeah" I peeled myself off of Freddie and went out to the kitchen where mum and dad sat. It looked serious

"We are going to go back up to Leicester, Gran isn't well and we were told to visit her, well.. before it's too late" Mum explained

My Gran forgot me a long time ago. She has dementia and it's been getting worse. I've never really had a relationship with her because she forgot who I was at a very young age. I've always avoided going to Leicester to see my family, what's the point if you have no relationship with them and building a relationship is out of the possibilities? I do feel bad though, she is my dad's mum after all.

"She doesn't know me though" I shrugged

"She's bad Johnny" Dad said

"What about Freddie?" I asked

Mum and Dad looked at each other.

"What we will do is book two hotel rooms. You and Freddie can have a room to yourselves and discover Leicester and have some quality time together while me and your dad go visit Gran" Mum suggested

"That would be nice" I smiled

"It's for a night, we will go bright and early tomorrow morning" Dad said

"Alright. I'll go and get Freddie to pack a bag" I said as I got up and walked to the living room.

I turned on the lights which seemed to annoy Freddie.

"Hey! What was that for?" He whined

"Come on, we need to pack" I pulled him up

"Pack?" Freddie quizzed

"Yes, pack, we are going to Leicester at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning" I said, knowing that was the time we usually left. By then we would get there at 7 and avoid the rush hour traffic.

"5?" Freddie nearly screamed

"You can sleep on the way up" I muttered

"Joohhhhnnnnn!" Freddie groaned

After a while Freddie actually stopped moaning and started packing some clothes. We used one of my suitcases as we were only there for one night and didn't need much.

"What are we going to do there?" Freddie asked

"We have our own hotel room so we could either stay there or go out and discover stuff while Mum and Dad visit Gran" I explained

"I know exactly what we should do" Freddie's eyes twinkled

"What?" I asked worriedly

"I'm not going to tell you!" Freddie shook his head with a massive smile on his face

"I'm scared" I said as I zipped up the suitcase which was sat in the middle of my floor

"Trust me" Freddie leaned in close to me

I gave him a peck on the lips, "I do. I'm just joking"

"Alright, I wouldn't do anything to harm you, I promise" Freddie said softly but seriously

"I know, me too" I said as we had our foreheads pressed together

"You'll enjoy it, I'm sure" Freddie smiled

"If you planned it I'm sure I will" I smiled too. Whenever he smiles I do, it's just an automatic response.

"You may have to help me with some of it though" Freddie smiled

Dad walked into my room, making me jump a bit.

"Hey boys, I've developed those photos. I got these for you" Dad came over and handed me the images.

I flipped through them and the smiled on my face broadened. Freddie hummed in happiness as he peered over my shoulder to see the photos

"Thanks dad" I grinned

I looked at them again, I saw there was two of me and Freddie so I gave him one

I looked at them again, I saw there was two of me and Freddie so I gave him one. I also gave him one of all four of us as there were quite a few copies, presumably for that reason. He held it to his chest like he was hugging it.

"I'll treasure it forever" Freddie said sweetly

"Me too. I'll buy some frames" I thought out loud

That night me and Freddie went to bed a bit earlier to get some sleep before the morning ahead.

"John?" Freddie said, breaking the silence

"Hmm?" I responded

"Your Gran, is she not well?" Freddie asked

"No" I replied simply

"So how come you don't want to see her tomorrow?" Freddie asked. He was laying on his side with his head propped up by his hand. I was just laying on my front with my head turned to face him

"She doesn't know me, never really has. She has dementia, remembers nothing really. I've never had any kind of relationship with her. Why?" I explained

"I was just wondering" Freddie yawned, "My grandpapa had the same, but that all happened when I was a toddler"

"Oh right" I cuddled up to him, "plus, I'd rather be with you"

"That's very lovely of you to say" Freddie kissed the top of my head before laying down properly again

"G'night" I said

"Sweet dreams" Freddie wrapped an arm on top of me before we both fell to sleep.
