Paranoid

I would've felt lonely last night if it wasn't for the thoughts of Freddie still seeping through my brain. Is this what love is? Constant thoughts of the one you love? Or am I just clingy and need to back off?

I had a nurse come and see me every hour. His name is Marty. He is quite tall, has gel at the front of his hair, has chubby cheeks, and he is very openly camp. Because of this I felt like I could talk to him about what happened. He's young too, not much older than me. We get along just fine.

At 4am he came in to do my checks.

"Hey John how are you keeping?" Marty asked

"I'm ok. I just keep playing it over in my head" I sighed

"Do you want to talk about it? What happened?" He questioned

"Alright" I said before he sat in the edge of my bed

"I'm all ears" he smiled

"I came out, you know like when you come out as gay?" I began

"Of course I know" he smirked

I giggled, "well, word must have spread to a group of boys who don't take kindly to 'queers'." I said making air quotations with my fingers

"Did you get beaten up?" Marty asked

"Yeah" I nodded with a few tears escaping my eyelids

"Oh honey!" He gave me a hug, "I had the same, I know what it's like"

"Really?" I quizzed, wiping my eyes

"Yes. But it was my dad that beat me up. He always said that 'Martin has no place in this family' and 'Martin is no longer my son', it was hell" Marty explained

"Martin?" I questioned, slightly confused

"Marty is my nickname. It's more fun than Martin. Plus my dad named me Martin so I don't want anything to do with things associated with him" Marty confessed

"What did he do? If you don't mind me asking" I said politely

"I don't mind at all dear. He would hit me in my stomach, so bad that I had to have surgery. After the op I ran away from home and ended up in London" He admitted

"Wow" I said sympathetically whilst shaking my head

"I was only 19 when I left but it was the best thing I've ever done" Marty smiled brightly

"Even better than treating me?" I said mock offended

"Oh no, nothing is better than treating you John! Speaking of which, here is your pain relief tablets. You're scheduled to leave at 9am so I'll go and leave a message for your mum and dad on the telephone" Marty said before walking out

"Thanks" I called after him

The rest of the early morning consisted of me eating my breakfast - Cornflakes - a hospital specialty apparently. Apart from eating the soggy cereal I waited for my parents. Marty said they were going to arrive at 9.

When 9 o'clock came my parents were here on the dot. I watched the clock strike the hour as the door opened and Mum and Dad walked in.

"Hiya son, how are you?" Dad smiled

"I'm fine. Just a tiny bit sore on my back" I said truthfully. I felt completely better, it was just the thoughts of what happened that were troubling me. I did have one scrape on my back that hurt, only when I moved though.

"The doctor said we can go now. Are you ready?" Mum asked

"Yeah" I pulled my T-shirt on and shuffled out of bed, "let me just go see somebody" I walked carefully out of my room

"Ok" Mum and Dad said in unison

I walked out on to the ward and scanned the area. At the nurses station I saw Marty and walked up to him.

"Marty" I said to get his attention

"Hey John! Are you leaving me so soon?" He joked

"I'm afraid so. I came to say goodbye, and thank you" I smiled

"Ah bless you. It's been a pleasure" he hugged me and I hugged back. He then turned to my parents and said, "you should be proud of your son, it takes a lot to still be smiling after something like this. You're amazing John" he pulled away

"Thanks" I blushed

"See you soon, but hopefully not in hospital" Marty chuckled

"Bye!" I waved and me and my parents walked off the ward

I felt safe with mum and dad either side of me. Nobody could get me. Where was Paul, Tommy, and Harvey? Are they waiting for me? I was so paranoid I stopped dead in my tracks. Mum and Dad turned and looked at me.

"John?" Dad quizzed to see if I was alright

"What's up?" Mum asked

"Where's Paul a-and Tommy and H-Harvey" I stuttered in fear

Mum came up to me and put her arm around my shoulders, "they were arrested" she whispered quietly, "Roger went to the police"

"O-ok" I nodded and began to walk again. My dad held my hand and mum kept her arm around my shoulder.

"You're safe John" Dad said

"I promise" Mum added
