  Chapter 4

  Jace

“What about the girl over there?”

I looked over at my step-sister with an annoyed expression. For the past half hour that we were both sitting in the small cafe in front of my school, she kept pointing out random girls in her eye sight. And to add to the annoyance, she decided to sit beside me on the leather booth rather than across to, I quote “hunt for girls”.

“Lexi, stop,” I told her as I took a gulp of my coffee.

She looked over at me with wide eyes, trying to play innocent. But I knew better than to believe her, I had learned the same expression from her when we were younger.

“What? I’m just pointing out potential lovers for you,” she said with an extremely sugar covered voice.

“Don’t give me that bullshit, you just want me to get a girlfriend so you can double date. Apparently, I’m not entertaining enough to hang out with you alone,” I clutched my chest in dramatic manner, “I am wounded,”

“That’s not true!” Lexi cried out, “I love you! If I didn’t why would I be here right now?”

“Because you want to narrow down the population of girls in my school to find the ‘perfect’ girlfriend for me. Which, also, was a dead giveaway because you wanted to meet me right after school,” I deadpanned, “And this is all stupid because I am not looking for a relationship right now,”

Lexi made a tsking sound and looked at me with pity, “Hun, that is never true, you’re always going to look for true love,”

I looked at her in disbelief, “No, I just want to focus on my music career,”

It was true, I wanted to aim higher, to aways push myself to do better because I knew I could. Even with a hugely successful album out and an awesome tour under my belt, I was far from being satisfied. I wanted to do the best I could, and I knew I was far from that. I could do so much more.

“Like you have to focus on anything, everyone already knows you. Oh, by the way I heard your song on the radio for like the past week,” she beamed at me, “I’m so proud of you baby bro,”

She extended her hand towards my head, most likely trying to ruffle my hair, but I swatted her hand away before it could get anywhere near my neatly styled hair.

“I’m only six years younger than you,” I scowled at her with annoyance. As much as I loved Lexi, I was happy that she didn’t live with me. She was extremely annoying.

“Exactly,” she winked at me, “So, how’s the singing going? Got any new songs?”

“I’m still writing stuff,” I told her, before remembering the news that my agent had told this morning, “I’m going back into the studio soon to start on the next album and some singles,”

“Album?” she asked with an excited tone, “You just got back from tour and you’re already recording another album. Oh my God, this is really happening, isn’t it? Soon you’re going to be this huge star with no time for your ol’ bigger sis,” she wiped a fake tear from her eyes, “My baby bro is growing up,”

I laughed at her overdramatic reaction, but really I didn’t expect anything less from her. We were both overdramatic fools. That’s why we got along so well. I looked out to the window to see the old building of my school. The courtyard to the school had freshly cut grass and perfectly trimmed oak trees that were plotted all over the yard. School hadn’t ended all that long ago and there were still a great number of people mingling in the front yard. It seemed like whoever wasn’t outside was in this cafe.
