Chapter 10
Elise
Clair led me to the simple and well furnished living room, where the sun was casting a beautiful glow in the room. The whole house was so clean, that I was scared that just touching something would mess up its spotlessness.
I kind of felt out of place in my skirt and t-shirt as I sat on the couch across from Clair, who was wearing a well cut and stylish dress. Clair hadn't been lying when she said that she was about to have tea, because the coffee table in front of us was filled with extremely good looking food and a tea pot and tea cups. I guess Clair was a more eye eater than an actual tummy eater.
As Clair placed a cup in front of me, I could already feel my mouth start to water. I smiled at her brightly in appreciation, the only thing that I had eaten was the banana bread I made in the morning and it was almost three now.
"So, how did the boys end up at your place last night?" Clair asked curiously.
"We were out shopping when we bumped into them, they said something about not being able to come home for a while so Dani and I invited them back to our place," I explained to her, not wanting her to get the wrong impression of them coming to our house.
Clair nodded in understanding, "I am truly sorry for what happened, it's my fault that they barged into your evening,"
"It's quite alright, it wasn't your fault either," I tried to say, but Clair was already talking over me.
"No, no, no," she shook her head, "It was my fault, I didn't think that having a conversation with their father would lead them away for the night,"
I didn't say anything, I don't know what was appropriate to say in a time like this but thankfully Clair spoke before the silence became awkward.
"Jace's father and I don't have the best relationship," Clair stated, as if to clear up an confusion that I had.
"You don't have to say-"
"You have a right to know why my boys thought it would be better to stay at your house for the evening rather then their own homes," Clair looked at me for a while before continuing.
"Since Phillip and I own a company together, we have to still communicate about the business, and sadly the reason that the divorce happened was because of the pressure of the company to start with, so when we do speak about the company it often turns into arguments,"
I nodded, taking a sip of my tea as she spoke. It felt like the information she was telling me was too personal, and the void and empty tone that she was using made it seem like this wasn't something that she didn't want to speak about either.
"Sometimes things happen that we don't have control over," I said, hoping that the words were the right ones to use at this moment, "And we just have to make the best of our situations,"
Clair thought about what I said and then nodded. We changed the topic then, talking about everything and nothing. I liked being around Clair, she was a great person an it always felt nice to be around her.
After a few hours, I decided that it was time to go home. I said my goodbyes to Clair and Jack, I even found Milly on my way out. But I saw no sign of Jace, he was probably still wrapped up with his music.
The rest of the day was quite uneventful. I spent some time with Dani, went on a bunch of social media websites trying to reply to as many messages as I could. I had dinner was Grandpa and Dani at Grandpa's restaurant and then went to bed shortly afterwards, still tired from the sleep deprivation that I had since yesterday.
