Chapter 5
Elise
“Are you sure this dress doesn’t make me look fat?” Dani asked me for what seemed like the billionth time.
“Yes,” I said without taking my gaze off of the road that stretched beyond me.
Dani, Grandpa, and I were all currently going to my school on a Friday night. It was a peculiar thing to bring your family with you to school in the evening, but there was a program that the board had held to “honor the students achievements with their loved ones”. In other words, it was just an excuse for parents to flaunt their kids in front of other rich folks.
“You didn’t even look!” she accused me.
“Like I need to, you’re a stick,” I commented while slowly pulling up to a red light.
All of us were in our best clothes, meaning we were all wearing the clothes that Dani made. Grandpa was in a spiffy looking suit jacket that made him look about a decade younger than he was. Dani and I were wearing matching skater dresses but in different colours, Dani red while I opted for a bubblegum pink.
“Like you’re the one to talk, you’re thinner than me!” Dani retorted. Without even looking up I knew that she was pointing a finger at me.
“Now girls, you both look beautiful,” Grandpa said in a soothing tone, “You don’t have to worry about looking fat Danielle, you will always be beautiful. That includes you as well Elise,”
I smiled feeling a blush creep across my cheeks. I was never good with complements, even if it was from my Grandpa. Which may or may not have been good with the business that I worked in.
“Thanks, Grandpa,” Dani said as she leaned in from the backseat to kiss him on the cheek.
In no time - much to my dismay - we had reached the overcrowded parking lot of my school. The lot was void of any people but every single parking space was taken up by shiny expensive looking cars. I guess none of them could give up a moment like this.
When we finally found a spot in the back corner of the lot, we got out and walked towards the front of the school.
“How do you walk so easily in those?” Dani asked in awe as she referred to the five inch black pumps that I was wearing.
I grinned at her, adding jazz hands for effect, “Magic,”
“No, really I can barely walk in these damn three inch heels, how the hell can you walk in those without tripping?” she asked a bit peeved off.
I laughed, to be quite honest I actually loved wearing heels. There was something about have the clicking sound reach your ears when you walk, kind of like you had a purpose. Or that you were a bad ass chick that could stab someone with their shoes. Whatever it was, I loved it.
“Elise has a natural balance,” Grandpa answered her, “It runs in the family,” he winked at Dani before tugging on his suit.
When we walked into the huge building, we were met with the buzzing sound of the large amount of people walking in the hallways towards the main hall, where the ceremony was being held.
“Are you going to win anything, darling?” Grandpa asked me as we weaved through groups of incredibly dressed up people. I was starting to feel underdressed, and that was saying something since I could never give up a chance to doll myself up.
