"I am death."
The forest ironically felt more like a graveyard after those words were uttered. Even the rain seemed to become mute to the tension that lingered in the misty evening air. It took strength, but you finally managed to raise your gaze back to Taehyung. His eyes rounded and you almost felt as though you could see his heart stop in his chest.
"No..." Taehyung's lips barely moved with that simple word. His voice carrying away with the sound of the wind that finally returned. "No!" He made himself heard the second time as he quickly lunged forward.
Taehyung wasted no time in pushing himself between you and Yoongi. His back to your chest he began to retreat a few steps as he held his arms at length and tried to shield you. You stumbled against his sudden force for a moment, before catching yourself thanks to your grip on his leather jacket. You peeked over his shoulder in surprise. Yoongi simply just turned to face you both now as Taehyung turned himself into a makeshift barricade.
"I won't let you take her!" His voice continued to rise as he shot daggers for eyes at the man much shorter than himself. The simple grip on his jacket, you could feel his shoulders shaking. You weren't sure if that was out of blind rage or perhaps a sense of defeat.
"I don't believe you're in a position to tell me what I'm capable of doing, Taehyung." Yoongi's cold voice breathed out as he tilted his chin up higher toward the sky, meeting Taehyung chestnuts huts as they entered a stare down.
"I don't care who you are!" His arms lowered as he took on a somewhat of a battle stance, one foot sliding forward in the soggy earth as he neared death himself. "I won't let you have her." His voice was like the magma chamber of a volcano, deep, but filled entirely with the molten rock. His voice could be powerful enough to make your bones feel like they were vibrating as his conviction shined through his words.
"Taehyung..." Your hand slid up his back, trying to grab hold of his shoulder softly but your touch nor your voice had any effect as the two men processed as if you weren't even there at all.
"It's a nicety that I'm even offering you the chance to see her now. If I wished it, she could be gone in the blink of an eye. Consent or not." Yoongi's words caused you to flinch as he verbally showcased his abilities.
So, he didn't actually need your permission to make you 'move on', despite what you had previously been lead to believe. He was death after all. Your eyes downcast, taking that in for a moment as you become lost in your thoughts. Perhaps it was foolish for you to believe you had any trump card in this fight.
"If you were to do it, I'd devote the entirety of my eternal life to making yours a living hell." Taehyung's deep voice hissed from his lips as his upper lip curled up, baring his teeth like a ravenous dog that was ready to strike.
Boldly, and without a single strand of reserve he defended you. You were able to see the extent to which he cared, to go up against one of the most powerful beings in creation and show no weakness for your sake. He looked ready to do battle with the entire earth if it meant keeping you safe, keeping you by his side. It was that tenacity that made the pain in your chest grow that much stronger. You wished that he had never been placed in this predicament, that he wasn't made to suffer for your sake but that possibly was very much real.
"Oh, you could very well try." Death showed no sign of bowing to his will. Why would he? He seemed like the last person to appreciate idly threats as if they'd do anything to bend his will that was the strength of a mountain. No matter how hard the window blew, the mountain couldn't and wouldn't bow to the wind, and Yoongi was larger than Mount Everest.
"Enough!" Whipping around Taehyung you quickly got back between them and held your hands up at arm's length. You forced Taehyung back and Yoongi simply stepped back from your touch, never letting you actually meet his frame but allowed himself to move with your forced distance. Your eyes went to Taehyung, lids half fallen and face full of regret. "Enough..." You repeated softly this time as your arms slowly lowered back to your sides.
You could see the expression in his eyes, the question as to your reasoning all without him uttering a single word. Taehyung was frozen in his place, grounded to the earth like a weight, floored by your single worried command. He was worried, scared even that perhaps you had sided with death and his fears came to light as you took a moment, inhaling one last breath before--
"He's right." Your voice shook, almost breaking apart at two simple words. It felt like there was a bolder in your throat you'd never be able to swallow. Your heart was in your stomach, and your knees so weak they wanted to break under their own weight. You saw the life in Taehyung's eyes just melt away, his complexion became pale. Was that betrayal you saw in those earthy eyes?
"We can't do this for eternity, Taehyung..." You turned your body to face him, taking a solitary step forward as you started on your quest to make him understand. As you inched forward, however, Taehyung took a step back. The idly gesture making you want to rip your own heart from your chest. "We knew there were risks." You chewed at your lower lip as you could feel a sense of heat began to flood to your eyes but you force them back with every bit of strength you had.
"We could never run from the 'gods' forever..."
