I hadn't really noticed anyone else when I met Ryan. So when another boy started talking to me, I didn't exactly know him.
"Trinity, I'm unsure of how to solve this problem," he said. "Could you help me?"
"Um, do I know you?" I asked.
He looked up from his book and I found myself staring into his azure eyes. Water, definitely Water. He clutched his heart with one hand, as if he had a sudden heart attack and replied, "I'm Luke, remember? Luke Hemmings? The guy who has been sitting next to you since the start of this year in math and history?" Earth, too?
"Oh, sorry," I said, my voice barely louder than a whisper. "I have been really preoccupied with things."
He laughs, as he scoots closer to me. "So, Trinity, how about helping me with this problem instead of staring at me with a frown on your face?"
I snapped out of my daze and leaned forward to look at his work. "I'm sorry," I muttered, scanning the problem.
"What's that on your wrist?" he asked, pointing to my left wrist, where a ball of fire was surrounded by a ring of jagged rocks that was carefully inked onto my skin permanently.
"They're my elements," I replied simply, not wanting to elaborate further.
"Like Avatar?" he asked, as I looked at him, confused. "Y'know, the last airbender? The bald kid with an arrow down his forehead? No?" I shook my head. "Anyway, that's pretty cool."
"It wasn't meant to be cool," I mumbled. "It's my symbol."
"Really? How do you know?" Luke asked eagerly as I jumped.
"I just... You wouldn't get it," I trailed off
"Which elements are mine?" he persists, leaning closer to me. I moved away slightly, not used to such closeness.
"Well, I don't really know you, but I guess Water and Earth?" I say, resting my chin on my hands.
"Huh, that's cool," Luke smiles, and I feel my heart drop-just like the first time Ryan smiled at me.
Water. Definitely Water.
Earth, too.
Yet, he seems as if he's more than just the two elements. Maybe more than the elements itself.
Maybe he's infinitely empty and fulfilled.
