First season, technically.
I'm actually surprised that I haven't even made a chapter about this anime.
All of the episodes of the first season are on youtube, so feel free to watch it if you want to.
I first heard about Dream Festival after looking up a twitter feed from actor Kimito Totani. It was there that I learned that he voice acted a character in that anime. Toku fans should know who the actor is, but if you don't know who Kimito Totani is, he is famously known as Daiki Kaito AKA Kamen Rider Diend in the TV show Kamen Rider Decade.
He was recently reprising his role on the current Kamen Rider series, Zi-O, so I decided to look up his twitter account to see what was going on.
and those events led me to watch Dream Festival.
I will now summarize Dream Festival,
so everything else below:
SPOILERS BEWARE. I warned you.
So it starts off with this red haired guy named Kanade that looks like he was nominated for Junon Super Boy or something and his part time job is giving out balloons to promote some idol show or something.
His appearance is literally something girls and children would admire, and that catches a super popular idol's eye. Haruto Mikami is highly regarded as one of the greatest idols and he decides to let Kanade try out the idol business.
Oh yeah note that it's all male groups. Not female.
So Kanade meets the idols in training and is given a chance to do an audition to join the idol agency.
When the audition comes, the yellow haired guy (Junya), and the antisocial blue-haired guy (Shin), decides to let Kanade perform with them.
And... this is where experience the tropes of this anime. So basically, they start off with the song they're going to sing, and then they catch cards so they can transform into the fashion that is on those cards.
After that.... is the horrible CG rendered dance. and this happens...
EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE!!!
It's kinda painful to watch, but I can get used to it.
Trouble strikes halfway through the episode where a new group, KUROFUNE, arrives at the scene and captivating new fans.
They're like the badass yaoi group that everyone loves. Or maybe they're the super emo and mature guys.
Anyways, KUROFUNE causes the main protags to figure out a new strategy.
Oh, speaking of main protags, I might as well summarize them:
Kanade: Legit joined because of Mikami. His bright and cheerful personality opened up the hearts of his fellow idolmates and they can't help but accept that he is indeed someone important.
Junya: He didn't even enroll in high school. Junya went to the big city with his sister after devoting himself to be a popular idol. He seems very harsh at Kanade at first, but overtime he grows to be friendly.
Shin: The anti-social one that seems like he's the most popular out of the others. Like Junya he grew to be friendly with Kanade over time. He had an incident when he was younger and it involved the separation of his best friend.
Chizuru: Personally my favorite out of all of the protags. He's always bright, funny, and pretty childlike. It seems like he's always like that until an episode involving him and his twin brother was revealed. Like Shin, an incident was involved and they were separated until a radio talk show reunited them.
Itsuki: The most diligent and studious idol out of the protags. He knows that he's weak and believes the Junya will call him that. Junya however tells him that no matter his performance and skill he will always be an important part of the group.
In the final episodes, we get to see the final round between DearDream (the main protags' group) and KUROFUNE.
SPOILER: DearDream won.
Overall thoughts: Ehh.... I like the character developments that were built throughout the season, but the whole idol dance thing at the end of the episode felt a bit dissatisfying. Actually, the character developments is what made the anime really good.
The CG... they abused it too much that I was forced to see it every episode!!!
At least with Love Live they don't do a CG dance every episode.
I give the anime a 7.5/10. Mainly because I'm not into idol anime that much.
There's a second season, Dream Festival R, but I doubt that I'm watching it.
