Gawain bounces on my hip, clueless to the conversation beginning. "And!? Is it dangerous?" I asked. Amren grimaced and opened her mouth. "It's more complicated than that Feyre. You all might want to sit." We all found a spot on the couches or chairs. Amren stood standing in front of the fireplace, setting the metal ball on the coffee table. We all made sure to sit away from it. Except for G, of course. And after much fuss Az decided to take him and bounced him on his knee as his shadows wrapped around G's hair to calm him. Rhys's eyes slid to that.
"It took months" Amren began. "Not because I couldn't safely control it but because I needed it to trust me. I can't hurt the creature. Not in the form it's in to be able to fit in the ball, and I needed to get it to trust me. To talk." She pauses and before I can ask her to continue Cass buts in. "Well did it?!" Mor smacked him on the arm. "Cass that's rude. Amren, please continue whenever you feel like it." She paused. "Sooner than later if you can..." Rhys snorted and Az's lips formed in a smile, mirroring the one on my own face. But it quickly died as we glanced at Amren again who's face paled a shade lighter.
"It did. Yesterday. I haven't slept since it did. I only stopped an hour ago to come and tell you what I know. At first, I thought the creature couldn't communicate but then I heard it once mumbling under it's breathe, this was" she let out a breath. "Months ago. Since then I would talk to it in different languages. All that I knew. Except for one that I thought there was no way it could speak it. I was wrong. Out of frustration I tried it yesterday and it responded."
Was she going to end it there? "And what language did it speak?" I carefully pushed. "A language that should have died with me girl. The language of my home." We all sucked in a breath.
"Amren," Rhys began. "You told me you were the only one who fell through that crack."
"I was." She snapped. "I am. I am the only one of my kind to have fallen through but, it told me, it told me that it came from my world."
As scrunched his brows. "How is that possible?" Long before I was born there was a war between my people and the ancient creatures of the land. In all the history books I read and in all the lessons I was taught it was told that they were driven away from our world. Everyone thought them to have been killed but this creature said some of them escaped."
"Here." Az said. Less of a question and more of a statement. However, Amren shook her head in confirmation.
"Does the creature have a name?" Cassian asked. "Not one you can pronounce boy" we all looked at the metal ball then, like we were waiting for it to move. It didn't.
"That's all charming Amren but did it say what it wanted? Why it attacked Feyre." She scoffed at Rhys and before she opened her mouth G became fussy again. Mor picked him up though before I could even move, and he calmed again.
"The creatures are not on our list to watch out for. In fact, it is prepared to help us save it's brothers and sisters."
"Your joking" Cassian breathed but Amren continued, ignoring him.
"Az was right. The rebel group is behind this." I could see from the corner of my eye the small discomfort or brought to Az, but his face revealed nothing.
"They were quiet for so long because they were planning. Preparing. Figuring out a way to absorb the creature's power and use it for their own gain. Like for the attack against Feyre. It told me that it was supposed to kill you. That because it's magic was connected to them it could hear their plan. It was a sound plan too." Rhys tensed and I stroke his hand which laid on my thigh.
"But something went wrong. And they have spent these months figuring it out. Fixing it. And it believes they'll attack soon." We were silent for a while.
"Did they say what went wrong?" Cassian asked. Ever the warrior always thinking.
"Or why?" Rhys added.
"No. I haven't gotten that far yet with it yet. I came here as soon as I had enough important information." Rhys nodded and stood.
"We owe you our thanks again Amren."
She scoffed. "Just remember this next winter solstice." We all smiled. It was only a few months away. Our first solstice with G!
Mor gave him back to me and I prepared a bottle for him while Rhys began to give out orders. I listened the whole time and gave my input when I felt like it, but I was distracted. I knew Rhys felt it but he wouldn't ask until everyone was gone. It was just a lot to take in. It feels like the pin is dropping. And I don't want to be around when it hits the ground.
When he finishes his instructions and everyone leaves, he turns towards me where I sit in an armrest chair, Feeding G his bottle in my arms. He offers to take him for a while, and I hand G over to him. He sits in the couch and begins to stroke his head where a small patch of blue-black hair rests. I run my hands over my face and Rhys looks up from G to stare into my eyes. "Want to talk about it?"
I shook my head no. "I'm just processing. I'm thinking about the future. I'm thinking about G mostly."
"About his wings" Rhys replied. No exactly a question but I nodded anyways.
"We never really talked about it. Do you-do you want to send him to the camps."
He sighed and rubbed his free hand along his face while shifting G in his arms. "I know you're not crazy about it. Really, I'm not either, it was torture there. But there's a small part of me that wants him to go, to learn the culture and traditions of being an Illyrian. And I also worry for how the others will treat him as high lord if he doesn't. It's bad enough that he's a half breed, they'll already resent him for that but not having that history of training with them.... they'll despise him. But if we do send him, his power, I don't want him to go through what I did, what Az and Cassian went through— I don't know how my mother did it."
I caught his face between my hands, forcing his eyes to meet mine. It's like I released my problems onto his shoulders.
Our problems darling. Not just yours, not anymore. I think I just refused to think about it. I didn't want to but now that it's real-
I know. I know
And so I kissed the top of his head and worked my way down to his forehead, his cheeks, his lips. And just as I began to lean into his kiss I pulled away, snatching G with me. "But- "I laughed and quickly kissed him again. "We can talk about it tomorrow ok? We have time before we decide, and I know you're stressed about the rebel group."
"You know me too well." He replied with a smirk.
"Let me put G to sleep and maybe if you meet me in bed, we can have some fun?"
His eyebrows raised and he vanished before I could take a step. I laughed and began to walk to G's room. And even with all that we learned today, even with the weight of the future crashing down on our shoulders I knew that with my family, with G, with Rhys...... we could make it through this.
