Blind!Cas & tattoo artist!Dean. Thanks to the wonderful askingAalexandriaA for giving me this idea.
***third person POV***
Dean walked into the small apartment with a huge smile on his face. "Guess what I got, baby!"
Castiel put down his Braille version of Stephen King's Carrie. "Does it involve needles repeatedly puncturing your skin?" he laughed.
"Of course!" Dean plopped onto the couch next to his boyfriend of three years. "Now, go ahead. Guess where it is."
Cas leaned back and closed his eyes that could no longer see. Castiel had gone blind two years before he met Dean, at age fourteen, when he got an infection from a wound he got from wrestling that started on his temple, continued right under his right eye and ended on the bridge of his nose. The hospital gave him antibiotics but he had an allergic reaction to them, making the infection worse. The infection quickly spread to his right eye and then to his left eye. Castiel had another reaction to the eye drops the hospital gave him and his mother stopped taking him to doctors. She looked up different essential oils and tried those for two months. Cas' infections only got worse so his mom took him to the hospital but it was too late and his vision kept declining until he woke up to see nothing at all.
Cas thought about all the places his tattoo artist boyfriend had already filled up with his friends' permanent art. "Shoulder blades?" Dean muttered a negative. "Calf?" negative. "Forearm?"
"Bingo! Yahtzee! and survey says... God!" Dean laughed and Cas could her him shifting his sleeve.
Dean then grabbed Cas' hand and led it to the inside of Dean's forearm, right by the inside of his elbow.
Cas ran his fingers lightly over the raised skin. It took up the space of about four square inches. "Hint?" Cas asked.
"It's, more or less, an animal."
Cas found where he guess the head was and noticed the animal had a long pointed nose with a small bulb at the end. He felt around for legs but couldn't find any. Near the back of the animal was another raised circle of something. He sat back and thought for a moment about the shape and also what Dean had been talking about recently and then it clicked. "It's Zero!" Cas smiled.
"Yup! I've wanted him for a while." Dean laced his fingers with Castiel's. "It's just Zero, no background except for a little Jack-o-lantern behind him. He's white, of course, but damn Balthazar is great at shading. And he's got his cute little pumpkin nose. Next I think I want to get Jack next to zero. This is my first one on this arm, ya know. I'm thinking about making it a whole sleeve of Nightmare Before Christmas."
Dean continued to tell Cas about the tattoo and past tattoos and even future tattoos. Cas cuddled close to him with a big smile on his face and edited his mental picture of the amazing boyfriend he would never be able to see.
***four months later***
Dean nervously walked into the apartment to see Cas laying on his stomach and petting their new kitten. "Hey, baby, I'm home."
"Hey, love," Cas sat up and held out his hand for Dean to grab.
Dean slowly sat on the couch and pulled Cas into a slow sweet kiss. When he finally pulled back he brought his boyfriend's hand to meet his left wrist.
"Dean, I'm supposed to guess." Cas said, disappointed.
"Just... humor me." Dean sighed. "Figure out what it is."
Cas ran his finger tips lightly over the raised skin on his boyfriend's wrist. All he felt was a series of small circles. He slowly ran his fingers over the dots, trying to figure out what it was. Then it hit him, it was Braille lettering. He ran his fingers over the new tattoo once more so he could read it.
"Will... you..." he started reading the words out loud as he figured it out. It was harder than reading normal Braille because the small circles were barely raised. "Mar... marry... me..... oh. Will you marry me?" he felt tears in his eyes that could no longer see.
"Cas... I love you more than anything else and I just want to be with you forever.... so will you marry me?" Cas could hear the tears in Dean's voice.
Cas attacked Dean with a huge hug and began peppering his face with kisses. "Yes, Dean. Of course I will. Yes. Yesyesyes!"
***one week later***
Cas walke into the apartment and placed his cane on the hook right next to the door. "Thanks for the ride!" he called out to Balthazar before closing the door and walking over to the couch to sit next to Dean.
Dean wrapped an arm around Cas and pulled him into his side. "So what did you two do?" he pressed a kiss to Castiel's temple.
"Close your eyes." Cas told him and Dean obeyed with a chuckle. Cas then led Dean's hand to his left wrist.
"A tattoo?" Dean asked, surprised.
Castiel was, not only terrified of needles, but also very paranoid of the possible infection. Dean tried explaining to Cas the chances of infection were very slim if you or it done correctly. But then Cas would remind him that the chances are also very slim that someone would go blind from a wrestling wound.
"Yup," Cas said happily. "Guess what it is."
Dean felt over it like Castiel had done to him so many times. He felt a very short series of small dots. He instantly thought back to his last tattoo and chuckled. "Cas, I still haven't learned Braille."
Cas told Dean to open his eyes and showed Dean as he ran his fingers over his own tattoo. "Y... E... S..."
Cas smiled brightly and so did Dean. Cas then pulled his fiancée into a sweet but passionate kiss.
After he had lost his vision he feared he would never find anyone who would love him. He figured that his disability was too much of a burden. When he met Dean he instantly developed a crush on him. Cas was surprised when Dean stayed friends with him and even more surprised when Dean admitted he harbored feelings.
Now Cas was going to marrying the love of his life when he never thought he would have one.
