~Y/N POV~

I watched the show in a seat a little away from my siblings and everyone there, really. I waited for Race to come, half hazardly listening to the show. I had on an okay dress, my sisters getting their most elegant, but it was just to watch at a theater.

It was a little while in, I decided to focus on the show. I felt an arm slip around my shoulder and I looked to the new man. I was about to tell him that he had the wrong person when I realized it was Race.

"Race!"
"Hey Curly," he kissed my cheek.

He set his hand ontop of mine. I knew he wasn't too into the show by how he was playing with my hand. I got up and pulled him behind me straight out of the place. He was confused and slightly distressed that we were leaving, "Y/N, what are you doing?"

"You'll see!"

We ran through the streets, I trying to have fun while Race decided to be nervous and telling me to slow and quiet down.

We got to the racetrack dressed like a couple of rich people. "Hey, where did you get those clothes?!" I exclaimed, only now seeing it.

He looked handsome, but not over the top. A white button down tucked into a pair of brown pants with a vest.

Race also seemed to have a little grease or some kind of product in his hair to make it shinier than usual. He looked dashing, though it kind of made me a little bit saddened to see him stressing out to look 'qualified' or 'handsome.' He was already to me. I loved him in his regular outfits.

"Off of some guy," Race blushed and I understood he didn't want to keep talking about it.

We stood with soda in our hands and yelling at the horses. I was having the time of my life, people looking at us like we were insane. Which we were, but besides the point.

People dwindled and we began to slowly walk to my house. "Hey, do you want me to walk you home, Race?"

He looked surprised at first before it settled into a sweet kind of smile. "Not tonight, doll."

I looked at him confused, before just hugging him. He hugged me back. "Race...I think I-,"

He kissed me on the lips. I was so overjoyed and I kissed back. His lips were warm and he tasted like pop and a cigar. Sweet kisses slowly became more passionate like a slow burning fire resting in my soul for him.

Once we somehow pried ourselves away from one another, I found myself holding him closer to me than usual. Maybe I was just paranoid, but I felt like something bad was going to happen to my sweet love soon.

"Race, I was going to say before, I think I am in-," he kissed me again.

"Good night, Y/N. See you later."

"Night, Race!" I called out after him as he rushed to get to wherever his home was.

I smiled at the fleeing boy. He was so goddamn cute.

I turned around to try to get inside when I saw Betty, hair disheveled and clothing sloppily thrown on. "Is that Race boy courting you?"

I nodded, swallowing down the jitters in my stomach.

"I won't tell anyone anything about that Newsie if you don't tell anyone anything about my boy or about...this."

I nodded quickly, agreeing. And that was the night Betty and I really became close sisters. Keeping each others secrets, only I had to also keep hope Betty used protection.
