Chapter - 5

If Only

Don't cry when the sun is gone because the tears won't let you see the stars.

Naina stared at the tattoo on Dhruv’s hand. The guy must love himself enough to get his own name inscribed on his skin. He pretended he was stone cold outside but Naina knew he was still very capable of loving someone because he was successful in the one thing most difficult that is to self love. Loving someone else is much easier than loving and accepting oneself. Dhruv had done both of the things in his life. On their way to the Dhruv’s apartment in a taxi, he had told her he couldn't have his life complicated because it was already in a tangled mess of emotions. He had told her that he loved someone and couldn't even say a proper goodbye in peace when he lost her. There were waves of pain floating in those eyes and Naina couldn't stop staring into them the whole ride as the traffic lights from the windshield casted on his face and created shadows on the other side.

“Why does it have to rain and gets all dark whenever I meet you!” Dhruv wondered aloud as they stood together in front of his building. Naina tore off her eyes from his wrist on which his name was tattooed in a beautifully calligraphic fashion. She remembered their first meeting and could see in his eyes that he was reminiscing the same. She was out there in the graveyard to see a pole star and the rain had occurred out of nowhere ruining her plans. But God always have better plans for everyone and so did he for Naina too that night, she realized. She indeed saw a pole star or rather met a guy named Dhruv.

She smiled at him and then looked at the old building which was wet from the light showers from the sky. There were no lights in the windows so maybe it was a power cut.

“You live here?”

“Yes” Dhruv nodded at her and began leading the way when there was a complete blackout even in the outdoor compound of the society where they were standing. Naina had lived most of her life in a complete blackout so the dark was something which was home to her and she was least bothered as she calmly searched for her cellphone in her sling bag. She felt a familiar male presence beside her again and the rough texture of hand enclosing her soft wrist protectively. “Careful”.

He had said this word to her that rainy night too. As she flicked on the flashlight from her phone Dhruv began walking them through the stairs. Naina was touched that he had cared again to step back and lead her safely. But he had no idea that she didn't need help. She was familiar to this feeling of walking on the dark, not seeing anything but feeling your surroundings.

She could tell the building was very old from the damp smell of the plaster which has seen a lot of history. She was present in the moment but mostly she was hyper aware of Dhruv's presence beside her. He was so gentle towards her now, extremely opposite to the cold hearted man denying her to meet him again an hour back.

Dhruv keyed the lock in his apartment and he stepped in.

“Be careful of the stopper….” He spoke as he turned and flashed light on the stopper at his door to aid Naina to walk in but as he did so, she had already crossed it in the dark by herself and now was standing comfortably in his flat, her eyes lingering around as she used her phone to cast light on objects and walls of his flat. He watched her as she found her way to the small bean bag near the window. Naina could make out it was a rectangular one hall flat, in which Dhruv’s bedding area was unseparated by any wall, there were two windows but no balcony and by the look of the building and the condition his flat was in, she knew Dhruv didn't spend much time here.
