"Kate, please don't make me go to this," I beg as she sits in from of her vanity applying her makeup. "I'm going to miss the championship game tonight."
"You should be honoured that my friends want to meet you."
"Yes, I'm very honoured the fancy, rich ladies want to place their eyes upon me," I respond in a mocking tone.
"Kayla, please stop this. It's a couple hours of your life. That's all I'm asking," Kate sets her makeup brush down replacing it with a tube of mascara.
"It will be so awkward," I groan.
"Only if you make it awkward. They will love you, sweetie. Just be yourself," she dismisses my concerns. She zips up her makeup bag. Kate looks stunning as always. Her hair is in luscious curls likes mine, but she added elegant braids pulled bad into a twist at the back of her head. Kate had decided to wear a vintage lace long sleeve wine cocktail dress. The colour was beautiful against her flawless pale skin.
"Ready to go?"
The ride there was over in the blink of an eye. I was so busy anxiously going over the possible horrible events that may happen this evening. Next thing I knew we were here.
"Sophie, how are you?" Kate smiles when a thin brunette opens the door.
"Wonderful, come on in," she opens the door wider so we can step in.
"I brought you a bottle of your favourite," Kate offers her the bottle of expensive white wine in her hand.
"How generous, thank you very much," Sophie beams. "So you must be Kayla."
"It's nice to meet you," I shake her hand.
"I'm Sophie, I'm glad you could make it. Kate has told us so much about you. I feel like I know you already," she squeaks in her high pitched voice.
I find it hard to believe considering Kate barely knows me herself. I've been living with her for months and I bet she doesn't even remember my middle name.
"Why don't you two come into the living room and I'll introduce you to everyone, Kayla," Sophie leads us to a beautifully decorated room where four woman are sitting comfortably with champagne glasses in hand.
"Hello ladies," Kate greets.
"This is Kate's niece, Kayla," Sophie announces. She begins gestures to the women one at a time, "This is Amelie, Holly, Katrina, and Grace."
"Nice to meet everyone," I force a plastic smile onto my face. I barely registered what their names are because I'm focused on the trembling of my hands. I take a seat on the couch next to Kate.
"What grade are you in Kayla?" Amelie questions. I tell her I'm in grade eleven keeping the answer short and sweet. "How's that going?"
"It's going good. I managed to get my grades up this year."
"That makes sense. I'm sure now that you're living with Kate you have all the school supplies you need to be successful," Amelie gives Kate a warm smile.
"I have the same school materials that I had before," I state blandly.
"I'm just saying that your financial situation would have made it difficult. I bet a lot of the pressure has been taken off," she explains.
"My dad always provided the school supplies that I needed," I say more firmly this time.
I don't know exactly what she's trying to get at. It sounds that she's trying to say that my dad could not give me what I needed. That is false in every way possible. He gave me everything I required. He showed me love and support. That's all I could ask for.
