Someone is shaking my shoulders, my eyes instantly burst open. I gasp while my heart pounds out of my chest. The edges of my vision seemed to be red. It took a moment for it to go away, then I realize that Rouge was the one trying to wake me. It felt difficult to breathe, I continued to struggle with air. Rouge holds my hand and instructs me.

"In and out, just like that," she said calmly. But she occasionally glanced up, her eyes not matching her voice. I eventually pull myself together then quickly stand up. Rouge looks determined.

"You've been out for ten minutes now," Rouge says, face serious. She looks up ahead of us. "Infinite's been attacking anyone that gets close." I turn around and follow her gaze. Infinite was there, knees bent, stumbling, struggling to stand in one place. He had his hands over his head, glitches taking over his entire body. He was yelling. I couldn't tell if it was pain, effort, or rage.

I didn't feel any hatred for him at this moment. The first thought that entered my mind wasn't to kill him – not with the information I had just gathered while being inside his mind or whatever that was – it was how I could be able to destroy the Ruby, but still save the person trapped by it.

What can I do? I look at my hand, the one which I had carried my Phantom Ruby prototype in. With my knowledge, and loosened gauze, I found the tiny deep red spikes inside my flesh. There were only a few, I think, some got too small. That could mean that get there could be dozens if they were all that size.

Infinite, or the person that came before Infinite, had said that I was a "host". Are these tiny shards enough to turn me into the monster that he has become? Is there going to be a thing that takes my most dominant personality traits and increases them? I am full of hatred... violence. And most of all... vengeance.

Are these going to be the things that will define me?

I look to Rouge, lowering my hand. My brows were curving upwards. She looks at me.

"I know whatever you saw in there must have been bad, but Amy is wounded, Sonic and Shadow are missing and I'm barely—!" Rouge cuts herself off, crushing her eyes shut.

I look back at Infinite for a moment. He wasn't that far away, only a few yard. It may seem far, but it was the fact that we were in range of any distance attacks that worried me. Yet he wasn't purposefully taking the offensive. Rouge said Infinite was violent against anybody that "gets close".

I wonder for a moment what Rouge had seen in her alternate reality that would make her be empathetic towards me.

My brain hurts, I raise a hand to my head, wincing. Too much information was gathering in my brain at once. Those images flash in my head again. The ones I had seen when in Emile's – no, that jackal's head. Shadow holding a knife to my throat.

Where is Shadow and Sonic? I think through the pain. Crushing my eyes shut.

I see the jackal, who I thought was named Emile. When he was struggling against the chains, against the thing that was controlling his body.

Who are you? Who did you used to be?

The agony is intense. Pain was in my hand now too. It felt like the center of my palm was on fire. The burning sensation spread up my right arm. It was flooding my entire body. I fall to one knee, my hand trembling with pain in front of me. The other was clutching a fistful of my own hair.

   Make it stop...

"(Y/N)?!" Rouge yells, concerned. I think she placed her hand on my shoulder, but I could barely tell, everything hurt too much. I can barely feel her hand with the overwhelming pain in my brain, body, everything.
