Chapter 11

Astrid

I saw Zach rushing towards the main gate of the restaurant, his eyes were full of tears. At first I couldn’t understand what was actually happening, he was all happy but what happened to him now.

“Where Zach is running.” Lucy asked in a surprise. Without giving response to Lucy’s question, I  ran behind Zach to catch him.
“Zach… Zach listen…. At least tell me what happened.” I screamed, tears were rolling down my cheeks but he didn’t looked behind and drove off in his car.

I searched for his phone number and try calling him but he didn’t picked. I was so terrified, my legs were shaking, my hands were cold and tears kept rolling down my cheeks. I was sitting in the middle of the road crying.

Then someone patted on my back. I was hoping it would be Zach, I looked back but it was Lucy and Bryan. Lucy holds me from shoulder and hugged me.

“Can you please drive me to Zach’s apartment” I asked Lucy.

“of course Ash” Lucy said fondling me. Bryan was driving the car where Lucy was sitting with me on the Back seat, giving me support.

“Everything will be fine Ash.”  I nodded but didn’t uttered a word. After few minutes we were in front of Zach’s apartment but it was locked.

“Try calling his phone” Lucy muttered.

“ I have tried but he isn’t picking up.” I said in a devastated voice.
“You should try calling him tomorrow, may be tomorrow he will feel better and will call you.” She said putting her hands around me. “We will drop you at your home,  have some rest.”

I nodded with tears continuously streaming  out of my eyes.

I was sitting alone in my dark room with Zach’s thought in my mind. I once again called Zach’s number but now it was switched off. I wondered what is this urgency that Zach didn’t even thought to at least inform where he is going, he owe me this much.

Next morning I woke up with swollen eyes, I grasped my phone and my heart ached when I saw no notification from Zach. I tried calling him again but his phone was switched off. Tears were rolling down cheeks.

I took a day off from office I wasn’t in condition to walk. I kept crying all night, my thoughts were occupied with Zach’s.
Zach’s assistant Ashton hit my mind, may be he knows where Zach is. I called him.
“Hello Ashton, it’s me Astrid.”
“Hi Astrid.”
“Have you heard from him?” I asked “No Astrid, I haven’t heard from him since tomorrow.”
“Oh okay.” I gasped.

I was sitting on deck with a glass of beer, then suddenly I saw my phone flashed. It was from Zach. My eyes lit up when I saw his name flashed, I was happy at least he messaged me.

I extended my hands to grasp my phone.
“Hey love, hope you are fine. I wanted to tell you that I lost my father to heart attack and  now I am permanently shifting to Edinburgh as from now I’ll be handling my business and also my mom needs me. And I don’t think this long distance relationship will work. So I think that’s over between us.”
I fell on my knees after reading his message. I felt my world whirled around me, I  forced myself to open my eyes and mustered enough courage to message him.

“I am so sorry to hear about your Dad but Zach I know long distance relationship will be difficult but we can handle this together.” I hit sent, my hands were shaking, my eyes were swollen and I was a mess at that time

“Sorry Ash but this cannot work with me.” His message popped up.

My world shattered when I read his message.

“I.. I.. loved him, he loved me too, how can he do this to me.” I stuttered.
I felt someone reach out for me and forced me to stand up. He shook me and said “ Pull yourself together!”

“I can’t…” I said.

I felt him shaking me more intensely, “wake up!” He shouted.

I found myself staring into a pair of dark brown eyes outlined by a handsome tanned face. I stared back and it was Paul.

“Are you okay?” He asked me.
I took a deep breath and tried to steady myself. Then I slowly nodded. “How did you know my address?” I asked Paul.

“I asked Lucy about you and she told me about everything that  you have went through. So I thought may be I’ll see you  as I was passing through.”
“Oh!” I gasped.

“And here I found you lying on the floor weeping. Guess I made right decision.” He said tucking my hair behind ear. Though I know that Paul likes me and he is hitting me from the day I have met him. But he was there when I needed someone the most. He took me in his arms and caressed me, he wiped a tear off my eyes
“ Ash you can tell me what happened.” He said squeezing my hand. I looked into his dark brown eyes and he was genuinely worried about me.
“Zach… Zach… broke up with me.” I stuttered
.
“What? But Zach proposed you and I am sure He was in love with you only by the way he looked at you in the office, how could he broke up with you.”. Paul said feeling sympathetic for me.
“I know.”

“You look so weak Ash. Come on let’s go for brunch.” He said.

“okay.” I changed myself into a plain black top and jeans. My eyes were swelled as I have been crying all night. I was not in my senses at all.

“Come on” Paul said extending his hand towards me. I settled myself in his car and then we drove off to restaurant. I didn’t uttered a word neither did he as I wasn’t in a condition to speak.

We both ate our food in silence and then Paul  leave me at my apartment.

“Have some rest and I’ll call you after few hours to ensure that you are fine.”

“You don’t have to do it Paul. I am fine now.” I said in a low voice.

“Ok but still I’ll call you.” Paul said smiling back at me. He gave me a goodbye hug and drove off.
