Chapter 7

Kim Danniel

I tiptoed as I am heading downstairs while I carry my backpack in my back, trying my best not to make a single sound because I know my father  who’s sleeping peacefully now on his bed with his random woman won’t let me go out this early in the weekend morning.

Luckily I manage to reach our front door without making any noises. Sneaking to study in the library every weekend morning is been what I am doing during my summer vacation , since my father won’t let me step up to college in Seoul no matter how hard I tried to convince him. I will go nuts if I will just spend my whole summer vacation inside our house cleaning up his everyday mess and hearing different woman’s ridiculous moans and whimpers upstairs. I would rather sneak  to read than suffering every night in disgust

I successfully opened our front door and slowly closed it, it’ still dark and cold outside to go out. But Joaquin, the son of the library’s guard is my friend who kinda knew my pathetic situation, is probably in the library now to open it just for me

I started to walk in the dimmed streets of Jeju towards the library. It’s almost dawn and the sun hiding in the darkness enveloping the wide ocean beside me will about to rise soon. The sight of fishers and vendors  alongside the coast carrying their own buckets of caught fishes is the everyday scene I am witnessing, next to them are women and men in range of about thirty to fifty years old displaying different kind of fresh vegetables in their own stalls.

I put my both hands in the pockets of my hoody as I walk in the middle of the busy street market. Eyes of the people I will pass by would stop on what they’re doing to look at me, puzzled and confused. Probably wondering where could be a nineteen year old girl is going so early in this morning.

Just like my everyday doing, I will just ignore their stares and continued walking until I will reach the town’s library. I smiled when I saw Joaquin sitting in the stairs, hugging himself and yawning.

He stands up when he saw me, he smiled

“Good morning ma’am. You’re late today” he showed again his stunning smile, I smiled at him back

“I’m sorry, I had a trouble sneaking out because my father is having fun until two in the morning”

"Aww poor little Jen Jen"

"Shut up Joaquin" I rolled my eyes

"Kidding" He chuckled and messed my hair.

He opened the doors of the library and held my heavy backpack as he lead the way upstairs where I usually read books related to the course I wanted.

“You know your father is really an ass, I wonder how you stomach those sounds that you know- he paused and showed a disgusted expression –“ produced by different woman he brought everyday in your house, are you not disgusted Jennie?”

I let out a silly chuckle as I head to the bookshelves, getting one book and scanning its contents. The tall Joaquin is following at my back

“Of course I am disgusted by it Joaquin, who wouldn’t?”

“Then what are you still doing in your father’s side? You know you should just run away knowing he doesn’t give a fuck about his daughter’s dream” He leaned on the bookshelf and crossed his arms, brooding eyes are piercing while starting at me

If I am a normal teenage girl, I would feel excited and nervous at the same time being alone with a tall, dark handsome man like Joaquin. He is also like me, half blood Filipino and Korean but unlike him, he will fly to Seoul after this summer vacation to reach his dreams. I met him once I studied here so he recently became my friend since we both share the same interest, that is to study.
