it was christmas. a holiday in which families and friends gather together to celebrate.

a time of happiness, presents and good food.

oh, how i wish that was the case for us.

my mother and i both got away from my father. we finally got away from the monster.

the monster that abused us. the monster that ruined our lives.

still shivering from the winter cold, i got up from our seat at the park bench.

we had to retreat to this. we didn't have any place to stay, we didn't have anyone to fall back on. it was just me and mom.

it was just always me and mom.

"be careful, okay? come back soon."

we had been going from shop-to-shop and door-to-door asking for food or money. we were stripped off anything.

my mom fled with me in a hurry, only having time to grab a few of our stuff before my father got home.

we managed to survive like this for the two days we were out, i think having a small six year old child was enough to tug at people's heartstrings.

"hey mister, do you have some spare food? please?"

"fuck off, kid."

thinking that i should leave his eyesight as soon as possible, i scurried to the nearest shop.

i opened the door with my weak little hands as the soft ringing of the chimes entered my ears, and i was immediately met with a warm feeling.

it must have been their heater.

i approached the counter and was greeted by a middle-aged woman wearing a big smile.

"what can i do for you young man?" she lowered her head.

"can i please ask for some extra food. please. for me and my mother. we've been very hungry."

surprisingly, she didn't shut me down immediately.

"oh dear, please call your mother right away. we were just going to have our christmas dinner!"
