I looked at my best friend, Zeva. She knew how badly I didn't want to go downstairs. There's going to be so many people, and I know I'll say the wrong thing to someone.
"Livana!" my mom called for the second time. One more until she decides to come up here and get me.
My eyes widened in fear and I looked around my room. My eyes landed on my window, and I looked back at Zeva. She quickly nodded and went to it. I was so thankful that my mom had yet to realize that putting me in a room with a tree within one step of the window was a bad idea. Zeva walked out first, and then helped me onto the branch, knowing I was shaking so bad I could potentially fall off. She helped me the entire way down, and caught me when I almost fell flat on my face.
"Livana! Where are you?" I heard Mom yell from my room.
I took a deep breath and hid behind the tree.
"Did you find her?" an unfamiliar voice asked.
"No," Mom sighed. "She must've left."
"Does she do that often?"
"More than I'd like.."
I frowned as I heard the saddened tone of her voice. I looked at Zeva and she took my hand, and then we started going for a walk. I avoided looking at the movers that were helping our new next door neighbors, and just focused on my feet. I had just gotten used to our old neighbors, and now I have to meet new ones? I was beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed.
"Liv," Zeva started. "Don't you think you should meet them?"
"Not right now."
"Why not? The sooner the better, right? What if they have a son?"
"I'll meet them eventually, but.. I don't think I can do it right now."
She sighed and tucked her hands in the pockets of her jacket.
I looked at her, and knew she was feeling a bit frustrated with me. Of course she'd never say that, because we were both outsiders. Everyone here was super Irish and we were both super Greek. She's the poster girl for being Greek though. She has jet black hair that's really curly, and these piercing bright blue eyes. I was insanely jealous. I had brown hair that I had to curl everyday so it looked nice, and my eyes were a mix between blue and gray. It was never hard to figure out who a guy was looking at. No matter how hard Zeva tried to tell me they were looking in my direction, they never were. Not like it mattered to Zeva though, she has a boyfriend and they've been together for a long time. I don't think anything or anyone could change that.
"Liv-"
It was too late. I ran right into someone, and whatever they had fell to the ground. I immediately looked up, and my heart started beating faster, and I felt like I was going to cry.
"I'm so, so sorry." I apologized, trying not to stutter from nerves.
"Don't worry about it love, my mom would have hated that bowl anyway." the blonde boy laughed. His blue eyes looked warm and inviting, but it only made me even more nervous. "I'm Niall. I just moved here, and my house is down the road a little bit."
"So what are you doing all the way over here?" Zeva asked.
"My mom wanted me to introduce myself to some of the neighbors."
"Oh.."
"And you guys are?"
"Right, sorry! I'm Zeva, and this is Livana."
"Those are some cool names. I'm guessing you aren't from around here?"
"We're from Greece."
"But you don't have that accent?"
"I've lived here longer than I lived in Greece."
"I, um, went to A-America for a little bit b-before moving here."
"Little bit?"
"Well, l-long enough to develop an accent.."
"That's cool. Where'd you live?"
I glanced at Zeva, and knew she was excited for me. Niall only had his eyes focused on me, and I slowly started to warm up to him. Now if I could stop stuttering, that'd be great. "Um, Florida.."
"Beautiful state. Perfect for you, yeah?"
"W-What do y-you mean?"
"You're beautiful, so you must've fit right in," he smiled.
I smiled back, and blushed.
"Well, I should probably get back home. You live around here though?"
I nodded. "Right down this road."
"Cool. Maybe I'll see you around?"
I nodded frantically, and he laughed.
"Nice to meet both of you. Bye Livana."
He winked and then was on his way. I glanced at Zeva, and the smirk on her face was clear.
"He totally has a thing for you, Liv."
"Shut up.. You think?"
"And you obviously have a thing for him," she laughed.
"I just met him.."
"And somehow you seem to be comfortable around him."
I shrugged. "I should probably get back too."
"Yeah, me too. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"Yup."
She smiled and started walking the few feet to her house. I turned around and slowly started walking back to mine, hopefully giving myself enough time to avoid seeing anyone. And definitely enough time to think about Niall. Zeva was right; I'm already slightly comfortable around him, and it's never that easy for me. So what makes him so different?
