the plunge
the icy icy dive
into freezing cold water
that makes you feel alive
in the corner
the man who binds his breasts
in the shade
the girl who cuts her legs
at the table
the girl who fears they'll call her fat
at the pool's edge
the small child
afraid of drowning
embarrassed she doesn't know how to swim
above them all
the lifeguard who could not care
less
but the girl
the girl
with
the braids
she jumps in
she is all of this
but she overcame it
her insecurity
fear
shame
and she encourages them all to try it
to jump in
and they all follow after her
and underwater
they feel the pressure from the surface
the burning in their lungs
begging for air
but as they resurface
they finally feel alive
yet again.
