There was an oak tree in the back garden of the manor. It was big and old but very sturdy. It had been there long before Mycroft and Greg had and would be there long after they were gone.
Yet, in the little time that their timelines collided Greg and Mycroft liked to take shelter underneath it in the long, lazy, summer days when you could do nothing else.
Today was one such day. They had sat on a tartan blanket to share lunch together under the oak tree and were now having the type of conversation one can only have on a drainlingly hot day like today. A lazy, rather wonderful conversation, that consisted mostly of understood noises rather than coherent sentences.
Mycroft had his back against the tree and Greg's head in his lap. He softly stroked his boyfriend's hair, eyes closed, completely content. He was vaguely aware of Gregory fiddling with something but he just couldn't seem to persuade his eyes to open and take a look.
After a few moments of comfortable silience Mycroft felt his hair shifting and an odd presence on his head. He opened one eye and glanced down to see the beaming face of his boyfriend, who was still laying below him.
"What are you up to Gregory?" Mycroft asked softly, if not curiously.
"Nothing Myc." Greg just continued to grin at him. "You look beautiful by the way."
Mycroft raised an eyebrow before he gently patted his head and discovered that what Gregory had been playing with earlier was in fact a string of daisies, that he now appeared to be wearing.
"Thank you Gregory. It's wonderful."
"Like you."
Mycroft shook his head playfully, a lazy smile gracing his lips. "I think you'll find it's you that is wonderful."
Greg gave his boyfriend a small kiss on the cheek. "Agree to disagree."
Mycroft nodded softly. "Ok, love."
The rest of the afternoon passed very slowly, but the good kind of slow. The summer days spent happily under the old oak tree kind of slow.
