When we returned to the manor, I collapsed into bed. Being tossed around by Sebastian in a fight against Ran-Mao after being stuck chained in a dungeon was not good for my joints. And when the inspector died, I fell off the ship and had to be fished out by--you guessed it--Sebastian Michaelis.
You could have carried her, Nox, Luxxi chirped.
Not a chance, she growled.
Aw, come on! You have wings for a reason!
I'm a spirit of time, not a public transport.
"Could you two keep it down?" I said into my pillow. "I am trying too hard to sleep."
"My Lady?" Three knocks at the door. "Are you alright?"
I lifted my head reluctantly. "I got tied up for days in chains then got thrown around during a fight I wasn't a part of and then I almost DROWNED! I'm just peachy, Sebastian!" My head dropped violently back into the pillows.
He opened the door. "Would some tea and cake soothe you?"
Luxxi appeared instantly. "Cake!"
Sebastian set a plate down for him then one for me with a cup of steaming tea. I pushed my body up and ate a bite, reinvigorated by the taste. I took a sip of tea.
"Thanks."
"You are welcome, My Lady. Is there anything else you would like?"
I looked up at him happily. "You think you can stay with me for a little while?"
"Well, I do need to prepare dinner. But... I suppose I can spare a few minutes."
I nodded. "You sit on my bed if you want."
He glanced at my bed. "It would be against my rights as a butler to, My Lady."
"And if I ordered you to?" I gave him a sly smile.
His eyes glinted. He was amused. "Oh, very well, My Lady." He sat down exactly five inches from me. "Now, what have you got planned?"
Luxxi watched us from the foot of the bed, smiling with a mouth full of cake. I just took small forkfuls of it.
"Ask me."
"Pardon?"
I turned to face him. "Ask me stuff. I'll answer as best I could."
Sebastian's expression turned thoughtful. "Ask?"
I nodded, sipping more tea.
He tapped at his chin. "Who killed me?"
Luxxi stopped eating. His obsidian eyes were staring at me, almost glaring but not quite.
"I'm not allowed to tell you that. Because... because it may impact your future."
"But you have warned us on certain affairs."
"Yes, warnings on small events. Careful with the ice, watch the Yard, don't trust the ghosts. But I can't exactly tell you things. Next question."
He nodded. "How did you get to be between time and space?"
I shrugged. "No idea. I don't remember anything before being there."
"The time spirits. Why did they pick you?"
I gave him a nervous smile. "You know, when I said ask me things, I didn't think you would start off so heavy." I chuckled. "But then that's Sebastian for you."
His eyes flashed at me. He leaned close to my face, inches from me. I couldn't stop the blood from rushing into my cheeks. His lips were so close. I could almost kiss them.
"You know nothing about me," he growled, leaning away from me.
I frowned. "Sorry."
And with that, Sebastian got up with a professional bow and left. "Excuse me. Dinner will be ready in an hour." He closed the door behind him.
"Ouch. A true demon to the core." Luxxi's eyes glimmered.
