Lucian hates flashbacks.
When he walked with Jay in the halls outside the Café room, Lucian remembered when he was training at the FCI. They did everything they could to try to break Lucian, to try to become a killing machine. A part of Lucian actually believed that the FCI succeeded. Every monster they throw at him during training, every soldier they try to get Lucian to battle ― no matter how much he resisted, his unstable side wanted blood. It wanted to kill. Too late he realized, Lucian went into a flashback.
Lucian remembered thunder, the rain stinging on his skin. His iron collar on, as if he never taken it off. Lucian, and another Experiment about a year younger, stood in their positions outside in the courtyard. The shield in the sky is up, so they couldn’t escape by flying.
Lucian looked at the Experiment ― scared and frightened. The person is a Hybrid, just like him. By then, Lucian was probably thirteen, so that made his opponent twelve years old. He has ragged hair, and worn out tattered clothes. An iron collar is on his neck, just like Lucian’s. The poor kid coward as the Guard behind him barked orders at him, telling him to fight.
Lucian just stood there, grinning like a creepy madman. Hellfire spiraled around him. Grass started to wither. His skin tingled with dark energy.
This is the side that was unstable. This is the side that Erebus wanted to use as a weapon.
Thunder boomed, making Lucian look transparent from the light. Unwillingly, the other Hybrid advanced with his sword, but Lucan just stood there. The Experiment struck as he jabbed Lucian in the stomach.
The blade should have drew blood. It should have killed Lucian, right then and there. But his body went transparent at the last second, causing the attacker’s eyes to widen in surprise. Lucian grabbed the blade, rain drops dripping from the metal and his hands. Lucian grinned, ready to summon the Hellfire and finish the job. It will be easy. This Hybrid is the lowest class.
Lucian took his blade and sent it flying, and Lucian grabbed the boy by the throat. The boy cried out, holding the cold hands that held him hostage. Fear showed in the Experiment’s pale green eyes. The Experiment choked, crying out, “Please! Don’t! I’ll ― I’ll do anything!”
His grip on the kid tightened as Lucian kept hearing the whispers in his head, over and over. Kill him. He’s the enemy. When the time comes, he will backstab you at a moment’s notice. Kill him now!
Lucian looked straight into his eyes. He could have done it right then and there. But something stopped him. His free will.
I am not a killer, Lucian thought to himself. Lucian let go of the boy, who collapsed as he coughed for air. He looked up at Lucian and grinned. Lucian didn’t understand why. He was about to murder him. Why was he smiling? Then it hit Lucian: it was because Lucian gave him a chance to live. Lucian just stood there like an idiot, only for the Guard to press the button on his remote, making Lucian’s iron collar tingle with electricity. Then, it covered his body, shocking him as Lucian yelled.
His unstableness returned. Lucian’s eyes went back to murderous, and the boy tried to back up. He tried to get away, but it wouldn’t do him good. Lucian’s killer side made sure of that. With a flick of his hand, misty shadows grabbed the boy. He kicked, but his foot would just go through them. Lucian advanced casually and held the boy by the collar of his ragged shirt.
“Don’t,” he croaked, blood dripping from his face.
But Lucian just stood there with an evil grin, his voice cold and dark as he spoke the words that always haunted him later on:
