Lucian didn’t took the news very well. As soon as they went outside of the House of Fate, he flew to his dorm and went straight through the window, locking his door as he stood there.

Figures. Just his luck that Lucian would wind up in the most dangerous Class. Why would he think he’ll have a happy ending in this place? Now everyone will know how freakish and murderous Lucian can be. It will be easy to get the connections, because Undead Class = destructive power. Destructive power = murderous. Murderous = Lucian. Once Professor Pearce realized this, Lucian will be kicked out from the only place on Corelia that he might be able to call home. It makes Lucian wonder why Alastair Pride was so eager to let him join, even though Lucian was clearly not playing fair in his battle and almost killed someone . . .

A knocking is heard on the other side of the door.

     “Beat it!” Lucian snapped.

“It’s me, Mikayla,” she said, “Jay needed to talk to the Professor, so he asked me to come talk to you for him.”

“Probably so he can avoid me,” mumbled Lucian, “Since I’m basically labeled as a freak. Again. Why are you even here? I thought girls weren’t allowed in the Male Dorms.”

“The Professor trusts me enough not to do anything stupid,” she explained, “Just open the door, because you really don’t want to make me open it myself.”

Lucian sighed and let her in. Mikayla looked around and nodded, “Nice dorm.”

“Thanks,” Lucian said, “I’ll probably get kicked out of it.”

“Why do you think that?” she asked.

“Well,” said Lucian, “How many people know I am in the Undead Class?”

Mikayla bit her lip, “Hate to tell you, but when The Seeker chooses a Hybrid in a certain Class, the message kind of telepathically goes around to everyone.”

     Lucian groaned, “I’m doomed.”

“Why would you want to keep it a secret?” asked Mikayla. Lucian looked down, “Because my whole life . . . I’ve been labeled a freak. I’ve done bad things in my past. Really bad things. It what got me involved at the FCI in the first place. Nobody gets what I feel.

“Lucian, look around you!” said Mikayla, “This whole Organization is filled with freaks. Jay can turn into a Gryphon and fly. I can turn into a horse and run faster than the average human. Even Cavian can climb high heights without special gear in his Fox form. We all have something special here that makes us different Lucian. Different is a good thing.”

“Not if all you can do is kill,” mumbled Lucian.

Mikayla sighed. Then she said, “Lucian, look at me.”

Lucian did. Mikayla put her foot on his bed and rolled up her pants leg. What Lucian saw is scars circling around her bottom part of her leg. Lucian stared at her, horrified, “How―”

“My father was a drug addict,” she said, “He will drink and drink until he hurts himself, or in most cases, my little sister and I.”

Lucian blinked, “You have a sister?”

Mikayla nodded, “Yes. Her name was Molly, and she loved horses. It’s part of the reason we got so close. I used to live on a farm, and my sister would beg me to turn into my horse form and let her ride on my back.”

     He almost laughed, “Seriously?”

Mikayla grinned, “Yeah, it was pretty fun back then. One day though, Dad came home really drunk. I was surprised he didn’t get into some kind of an accident. Anyway, when Dad came home, he saw Molly and me in the field. I was in my horse form at the time, Molly riding on my back. I don’t know what Dad saw, but he called me a beast and attacked, a blade in his hand. He managed to cut my back leg, Molly screaming as she fell off. I staggered downward, unable to get up. He would have killed me right then if I hadn’t turned into my human form, Molly knocking Dad out with a small barrel.”

“Jeez,” said Lucian, “Exactly how young was your sister when she did that?”

Mikayla giggled, “About eight. I was probably twelve. Anyway, we were both frightened at what just happened. Molly was freaking out over my bleeding leg.”

“So what happened to your Dad?” asked Lucian.

“Soldiers came into our farm and arrest our father for attempting to murder. Molly and I were taken to the orphanage, and we got separated. I got depressed, watching little Molly being taken from another family. I finally ran away from the place. I ran and I ran until I just couldn’t anymore. Then, I ran into Jay. He told me he could help me. That he knows what I am going through.”

“You agreed to go with him?” assumed Lucian.

“Actually,” said Mikayla, “I kind of gave him a bloody nose and bolted.”

Lucian laughed. Mikayla cracked a smile, “I’m serious! Ask Jay himself, he’ll tell you.”

“Okay,” said Lucian, controlling himself, “I’m good now.”

“I finally agreed to go with him,” she continued, “Met tons of new friends, and learned stuff about myself that I didn’t realized before.”

     “Huh,” said Lucian.

“My point is Lucian, you can’t keep dwelling on the past. If you do, eventually you’ll drown in it and never be free to move forward to your future. Everyone here is special, and everyone has a part to play.

Lucian looked away, “But I did so much carnage, so much pain. How can I live myself with that?”

“You can,” urged Mikayla, “If you forgive yourself, then you’ll feel good. You have to make that decision Lucian. If you let yourself believe your powers are a curse, then they will be. You control the power Lucian. The power doesn’t control you.” She glanced at the clock, “I have to go Lucian. I’m late for training.”

     “Okay.”

“Remember what I said,” said Mikayla as she walked out, “No matter what other people think of you, just remember that you have a place in this world. I know you can let go of the past and look to the future; because believe it or not― you have a gift Lucian. Don’t think of it as a curse.”

She walked out of the room and gently closed the door, leaving Lucian alone in his room. The only sounds he can hear are the whispers echoing in his head:

Curses cannot be controlled. They can only kill.

Lucian sighed and fell backwards on his bed, looking up at the ceiling. Unnoticed, a brown rat is hiding beneath his bed. It crawled out the open window and out of the Organization, and when it was far enough, the rat changed into a human teen about a year older than Lucian. The Rat Hybrid, Rufus, grinned and traveled back to the FCI. Oh, the news he had for Erebus!

Rufus entered Erebus’s office, who has been waiting for him. Erebus looked at Rufus with an eyebrow raised, “Well?”

“Experiment 666 has been accepted in the Undead Class,” said Rufus, “Just as you predicted!” Erebus nodded, “Good, and what about our little hummingbird?”

Rufus tried hard not to smile, “I’m afraid she has joined the Organization. The little traitor is even in a Class.”

“What?!” barked Erebus, causing Rufus to yelp and scatter. Erebus growled in frustration, then quickly regained himself. He walked to a shelf and pulled out a small chest, taking out a golden cuff bracelet with an Onyx gem in the middle of it. “I believe,” he said, “now is the time to teach my daughter a lesson when you run to far away from home.”

He put the bracelet back in the chest and walked out of the office, slamming the door shut behind him.
