~ Harrison - 28 years ago ~

Harrison skipped along the pond rocks, his heart paced unevenly with excitement. His parents backyard was a forest with many secrets and hidden areas that Harrison was forbidden to travel to for safety reasons. But with his curiosity, he just couldn't help himself. There was just too much to explore under those dark pine trees that hid the morning sky.

"River, c'mon!" Harrison called for his dog, who stood at the ponds edge, refusing to jump the rocks. His big grey and white coat waved with the wind as he reluctantly put a paw on the first stone.

Harrison laughed as he watched his dog almost slip into the pond trying to hold onto the uneven steps.

"Find you balance, River. It's easy!" Demonstrating to his dog, Harrison hoped back a few steps. As if to be bold, he even stood on one leg on the largest rock.

River slowly made his way across the pond and Harrison led the way again, walking even farther into the dark forest. He skipped over fallen trees and heavy branches that littered the forest floor until he reached a familiar stream that ran through the middle of the forest.

River barked as he hopped excitedly over the stream, in which he lapped at the cool water. Harrison rolled up his jacket sleeves against his tiny arms and squatted in front of the water.

"River, look!" Harrison pointed to a small silver fish that swam through the murky water. The small scales of the fish gleamed up at him, and he smiled.

River barked again, and Harrison looked up at him. "What is it, boy?"

The dog barked and pointed his snout in the direction of a small amphibian on the other side. It was a green frog, and Harrison patted River on the head with a tiny hand.

"Good job River!" Balancing on the balls of his feet, Harrison jumped over the short stream and landed clumsily on the other side.

River remained on the side they came, now resting in a sitting position with his tongue lazily put out of the side of his mouth. His blue eyes watched Harrison as he tried to catch the frog.

"Come here froggy!" Harrison laughed, trying to catch the slimy little creature. It would hop every time he tried to catch it in his palms, and it made Harrison frustrated.

"Just one catch. Come on!" Harrison signed through his nose and stepped up his game. Running over to the frog again, he crouched down on his knees and prepared to jump.

Using his legs, he pounced towards the frog and caught it under his hands. It bounced against his skin, making him laugh and forget about his frustration.

"Gotcha!" Standing up, he held the frog in one hand and brushed off his pants with the other, removing excess dirt.

River barked in praise, and Harrison smiles proudly. "Bet you couldn't do that River!"

Jumping across the stream again, Harrison set off to return home with River. It was almost dark, and his curfew had to be very soon.

Knowing the routes of the woods like the back of his hand, Harrison returned home quicker. River ran the rest of the way up to the house, and Harrison caught up with him as he neared the back door.
