My ankles tickled from the soft grass flowing gently at my feet. Looking around, I noticed I was in a front yard of a house.
Two people stood at the doorstep of the house, but I couldn't make out their faces because of the dark. The only light was a faint shine of the moon, but even that couldn't help. They whispered discreetly, and I had to take a step forward to pick out their voices.
"--can't do this..." A woman said as I caught on, her voice a panic. "I can't take it!"
The taller figure who was a man, took her shoulders in his grip. "Stop saying that. You're doing it whether or whether not you want to." He growled, making me shiver in my spot.
I reluctantly crept around to the side of the porch, trying to hear better. Something was telling me to listen, calling for me to listen. The only thing I could do was obey.
Peeking over the wall, I watched as the woman's shoulders shook as she started to sob.
"Why did this have to happen?" She cried, fighting the man's grip on her.
"Because it was meant to, Savell." The man says gently, although his voice was rough.
The lump in my throat wouldn't go away, and I felt my breaths hitch. That voice was almost familiar...
"No it's not!" She screamed, snapping me out of my thoughts and back to the couple. "I'm too young for this... I'm not ready..." She started walking backwards, but was caught by the man. He took her wrists in his hands and obviously squeezed them so hard she yelped in surprise.
"Savell. Stop fighting it!" He yells, shaking her again. She continues to sob, and fights his grip until she gives up and sinks to the wooden floor.
I feel my heart thumping wildly against my chest as a noise from the door makes the two snap their heads up to the sound.
"Come on." The man pulls the woman to her feet, and starts off the porch in a hurry. She cries out in distress, and yanks her arm away from him.
"Leave me alone, you monster!" Turning the other way, she struggles back up the steps as the noises get louder. But she barely makes it one step before he's on her and tugging her more violently away.
"You're coming with me, Savell. You love me." The man growls, covering her mouth as she tries to scream. I try to move my feet to help the woman, but I'm planted in spot.
Oh no.
"Savell!" I call out her name, but my voice is trapped in my head. Prying my arms off the wood, I scramble to the ground and try to crawl, but it's useless. A weight on my back forces me to stay on the ground and helplessly watch as the woman is dragged away to a car.
A person finally comes out the door just as the man has got the woman in the passenger seat and is walking to his seat.
"Hey! What are you doing!" An older man calls out, running down the steps. The younger one flips him off, and even in the night it is clear as day.
"I'm taking Savell away." He says as if it's the easiest thing in the world. "And you're going to be very quiet about this." Just as he says it, he pulls out a small handgun and takes a shot in the night, leaving the older man to fall limply to the ground.
I scream, tears now streaming down my face. I whimper in defeat, clutching onto the grass beneath me as if it's my only lifeline to the world.
"Say goodbye to your daughter, old man." The man kicks the body, before jumping into his seat and driving off, the woman's cries echoing into the night.
