That night I slept, I dreamed.
I dreamed about November, my mother, and Kaleb. But I didn't expect my mother to come to me like she did.
I was running through an unfamiliar forest, weeping as I was being chased by a pair of dark blue eyes. My ankles and calves started to bleed from the twigs that whipped across my bare skin. My hair whipped and tumbled across my back and neck, and the cold chilly air bit at my nose and ears. But I kept running, even when my eyes started to tear up and my legs started to go numb from the bite of the cold.
Only when I heard the familiar, spine-chilling whisper of the person I wanted to escape most did I hesitate. I slowed my jog even when my heart screamed at me to keep running and stopped entirely when I reached a large oak tree.
I was in a grassy field, with large hills stretching out before me. My dress cascaded down my legs, thankfully covering most of the wind from me. The whispers I heard drew closer, and I felt myself getting warmer and warmer as if the cold air was evaporating.
Tingles shifted up my back and my breath hitched as a hand brushed over the back of my neck.
"Hazel." Kaleb whispered, making me force myself not to try and lean into his heavenly voice. My heart beat erratically in my chest as I took uneven breaths of chilled air.
His hand made its way up to my cheek, instantly heating the skin there. I groan in frustration and finally gather enough strength to push myself away from him. I didn't want to play these stupid games anymore.
"Leave me alone." I stress, taking small steps backwards and away from him. He gives me a small smile, tease clearly shown in his eyes and starts towards me again.
Fear clogs my chest and makes my breaths come rapidly as I turn to run. My feet finally respond after a second and I take off in a steady sprint, eager to get as far away from him as I could. I couldn't control these feelings anymore inside of me, and I needed to escape then somehow.
Bounding across the hills I made my way across the grasses with no mind of where I was going. Where exactly was I anyways?
When I reached another grassy field behind a large hill I leaned over and caught my breath. My skin has chilled again, and a shiver wracked my shoulders. Something wasn't right.
Someone was near me.
Wind blew across my face as I whipped my head up to find the hidden person, but no one was around me.
"Stop playing games Kaleb. I'm done."
Footsteps crunched across the fallen leaves and grass. "Hazel?"
My heart stopped. I knew that voice. That gentle, soothing voice that cooed in my ears at night when I was a child, scared of the monsters under my bed. That voice that sang to me and called to me when dinner was ready.
That voice I never thought I would hear again.
"Mother?" I call out, tears forming in my eyes. My vision blurred as I frantically searched for my mom.
"Hazel!" Her voice came again, this time frantic and fearful and I felt my heart jolt with sudden fear. She was scared.
"Mother! Where are you?"
And then she appeared in front of me, her eyes strained with confusion and her eyebrows pulled in tightly.
"Hazel, what are you doing?" She whispered, staying where she was. She was beautiful, just as I remembered her. Her green eyes shown brightly in the pale fluorescent light and her complexion was an ivory color, like mine. She looked like she did before I left... Before she was...
