Weekends are the best days of the week. Not only because it's 'the weekend' and I get out of work, like normal people would think.
The reason why I love weekends is because I get to spend them with Riley. Two whole days without having to share her with anyone. Weekends are simply the best.
She's currently asleep, while I'm making breakfast. It's quite easy, all Riley wants for breakfast is milk and cereals. And making myself a pair of toasts on the side of that isn't exactly brain surgery. My phone starts making sounds, interrupting me in my making of a nutella toast. I pick it up, answering with a, "Hello?"
"Hi, Calum," it's Luke, "Did I wake you up?"
"Not really," I shrug. "I've been awake since a few hours back."
"Did Riley wake you up?"
"She's actually still asleep."
"That's odd." Luke chuckles. "What does Michael do to the poor thing that makes her this tired?"
I laugh, putting on some coffee. "Talking about Michael, do you know what's going on with him and Jas?"
"What do you mean?"
"They've been acting so weird lately" I lean my back against the counter, scratching my naked neck. "Like, when was the last time you and Chloe had Riley?"
"I don't know, last week?"
"More like two weeks"
"So?"
"Don't you find it weird how they insist in taking care of Riley all the time?"
"Maybe a little, but they adore her, so I don't really think it's a problem..."
"I just think it's weird" I pour myself a cup of coffee, sitting down at the table with it and my Nutella toasts.
"Maybe they just want to practice for the future?" Luke suggests. "They're engaged, which means they're probably thinking about a family in. A few years"
"Yeah, maybe" I sigh.
"So what are you up to today?" Luke asks, not even sounding interested.
"I will just spend my day with Riley" I say. Just when I say her name, I can hear a small sob escaping from the baby monitor placed on the kitchen desk. "Talking about her, she just woke up. Gotta go before she starts crying"
"Don't tell me you're still using the baby monitor, cal.."
"She's three. I'm her dad. I can do whatever I want" I say, standing up and walking towards her room. "Talk to your later, okay?"
"Whatever, bye"
I snort, slipping the phone down my back pocket before opening her door.
"Daddy" she says, lifting her arms up from the bed. Riley has this habit in crying almost every time she wakes up alone, and just like every other time, she has salted tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Hi baby girl" I say, walking inside to pick her up in my arms. "Why are you crying, huh?"
She doesn't reply to me, all she does is snuggling her face into my neck, hiding herself.
"Riley, it's nothing dangerous with waking up alone" I explain while making my way towards the kitchen with her in my arms. "I'm only a few footsteps away, and theres nothing scary in your room"
She mumbles something I can't quite understand, so instead I just place her by the kitchen table, nodding with a small "mhm".
I fix her a bowl with milk and cereals, putting it down in front of her before leaning against the counter again, watching my little three year old eat as I speak, "so what do you want to do today, huh?"
