Do you want a ride home from class later? If not that's alright too, I'll see you tomorrow.
I smiled.
Levi seriously needed to stop. Well, I mean, I loved that he was so considerate, and it never got old.
But damn, it was like he was trying to get rid of me or something.
Jokingly, of course, I told him such.
My phone buzzed in reply in my pocket just seconds later.
Ouch. No, of course not.
I was finishing up doing some rounds for nursing school. I had gotten placed into the advanced honors track, so I had been permitted to start early. It was a bit of hard work, but I enjoyed it immensely.
I was getting off of rounds in fifteen minutes, and I had other classes later in the week, but could do with some time alone with Levi.
He never complained about my busy schedule, just as I never did with his. I mean, yeah, ok, it got annoying sometimes when I really wanted to see him, but I tried to respect his space as he did mine. I'm sure it wasn't great for him some days either, but we both made it work.
I texted him back, letting him know I'd take that offered ride home, if it was still available.
For you, I'm always available. Do you want to grab coffee or something?
For as much as I probably didn't need caffeine, I had to admit that the premise of seeing him was tempting.
So I accepted that too.
Great. I'll see you then.
Grinning, I finished the rest of the shift. It wasn't hard, and we were currently doing NICU rounds - my favorite - so I never had a complaint when I came to the hospital every day.
Sometimes, when I was in the units designated for those with cancer and other diseases, I thought a lot about Kari. I still snuck away to cry during the shift sometimes, but those times were becoming fewer.
I'd miss her forever, of course, but she wouldn't want me dwelling on her death, anyway. She'd want me to go off and be happy, which is what I was trying my hardest to do.
Clocking out, I waved to Lydia, a girl in my nursing class that often did rounds with me. She was a bit quiet, but a really nice girl. She waved back, and let me know she'd see me tomorrow.
Walking out of the hospital, I saw the signature black Camaro that I had been in so many times in the past quarter of a year. How had it possibly been this long? It was nearly springtime.
I heard doors unlock, and I pulled open the passenger side door, lowering myself into the seat.
"Hey, sweetheart."
I turned to saw hello, grinning, and saw Levi holding out a rose.
I rolled my eyes, then stopped, panicked.
Wait. Is it an anniversary or something? Shit. How could I mess up this fucking bad?
He laughed, a sound that filled the car when he saw the expression on my face.
He handed it to me, which I took, almost numb with confusion.
"No, you didn't forget anything. Can't I just get you a flower because I wanted to?"
I narrowed my eyes at him, and he smirked.
He could, I supposed. There wasn't anything stopping him, but he did this on occasion just because he felt like it.
