I don't expect a response to my text and—
I am not bothered when I don't get one.
The days bleed together.
I'm forced to reenter the cafeteria.
I keep to myself and—
Try to not look at Jorge and Lee.
Some days I do better than others.
I think today is a good one.
So, when someone throws a backpack onto my table,
I pull out my earbuds with snark—
Only to look around in confusion—
As Lee and Jorge sit next to me.
Lee pulls out an apple and takes a big bite,
Jorge leans in and kisses my forehead.
We want to try for real this time.
We are tired of waiting for someday.
It's about time to make your daydream a reality.
Lee grabs my chin in a firm hold.
But if you ever lie to us again,
Your vagina is going to be toast—like crispy and burnt toast.
Jorge puts his arms around me,
Giving me a moment away from the stares.
Full of joy and happiness,
I lean up and kiss him.
Then I kiss a laughing Lee,
Taking the time to rest my forehead upon hers and—
Tuck away an errant strand of gold hair,
Promising never to lie again.
