Itachi’s eyes slowly opened to the sound of familiar giggles, soon followed by a low, familiar "shh". Looking to his left, he noticed he was alone in bed and rose up against the headboard to check if the bathroom light was on. It wasn’t.
Hearing another low giggle coming from the other side of the bedroom door, Itachi knew right away whose giggles they belonged to at five in the morning and pulled away the bed covers. He opened the door to step into the hallway to hear the following conversation.
“Mia, sweetie, you know this already.”
“Nooo... I can’t remember.”
“Yes you do, liar.”
“Mama, you’re so tired. Should I get the squirt bottle?”
"Little girl, I will pinch your nose."
The hushed sound of his two favorite ladies’ voices made him smile. [Name]’s voice, however, sounded croaky and tired while Mia’s seemed awake and chipper.
“It’s your fault, jerk,” [Name] grumbled and yawned deep.
“Ooh, that was a big one!”
Before [Name] could hush the giggly toddler, Itachi walked into the room. “What’s going on?” And found both of them lying on the ground on their stomachs, one of them looking up with half-lidded eyes and the other widened her eyes in glee.
“Goodmorning, Daddy!”
“…hey,” said the woman whose arm was about to give out under her chin. “Sorry to wake you. Mia fell asleep last night while trying to do her homework on her own.”
“It was an accident,” Mia defended shyly, tapping her fingers together.
“She snuck into our room about twenty minutes ago”—[Name] continued while rubbing her eyes—“and shook me awake saying that she woke up on her desk, all freaked out. We’re almost done, though. I’ll go back to bed soon.”
Itachi shook his head and joined them on the ground, sitting next to his daughter. “Well I’m wide awake now thanks to the giggler,” he said, lifting Mia into his lap and looks at [Name] whose eyes were running out of business.
“Go back to bed, love.”
“No, no,” she slurred with an eye open. “I’m fine. Just…” she trailed off with another yawn. Itachi shook his head and rested his chin on the top of Mia’s head—who was too focused trying to practice her last name as part of her homework. Her tongue stuck out form the edge of her mouth and her little brows creased together as the pencil in her hand, try after try, slowly shaped the letters on her notebook.
Uhica.
Uciha.
Hicha.
“Here,” Itachi chuckled and grabbed a hold of her little hand, guiding the pencil so Mia could spell it out while he sounded it out. “Ooh… Chee… Ha.”
[Name] watched her daughter carefully write out each letter and smiled when her eyes widened as each letter appeared correctly under her pencil. Itachi made it so easy, unlike her method of clapping out the syllables and lifting her index finger to draw letters in the air… It was too early to be a parent, [Name] noted—especially after staying up late the night before to finish up homework for her human anatomy class.
“—Ha!” Mia grinned up at him when her paper finally spelled out the correct name, but then pouted. “Why you gotz to have a hard last name, Daddy?”
[Name] snorted, poking Mia’s foot to tickle her. “Wait until you learn to write your second name, Miyuki.”
“Are you staying late at school today?” Itachi asked while a determined Mia was already attempting to write her second name, failing miserably (“Myik”, “Muki”).
