"Thank you both for coming to see me."
Mike and I stood in our hospital directors office. Cristine had reported both of us for inappropriate misconduct at work. I admit that we were, in fact, being inappropriate at work but Mike has been assuring me that we will get away with it. I don't really believe him but I'm still way too happy to care about it as much as I should be.
"So, a uh... co-worker... has put forward a complaint. According to this worker, she had witnessed sexual relations being exchanged between you both whilst you were both scheduled to work. Now I understand that both of you do in fact have an intimate relationship outside of work?"
I twiddled my hands behind my back, some anxiety finally coming upon me. We both nodded.
"Do either of you wish to relay why this complaint might've been brought to my attention?"
Mike looked at me and then looked back at the director.
"Sir, I can assure you Miss Porter and I keep our relationship appropriately professional when we are both here. We do not allow our personal lives to interfere with our work. During the hours of 14:45 and 15:00 today, Felicia was indeed in my office, responding to a page that I had sent her. I needed to discuss and allocate priority to certain patient files." Mike had said almost perfectly as if he had rehearsed this a hundred times in his head.
"I see. Anything to add, Miss Porter?"
I shook my head. "No, sir. Dr Varshavski conveyed the situation perfectly."
"Indeed. Have you made any contact with an administration officer named Cristine, Miss Porter?"
"Yes, sir. Her desk is directly next to mine at the front reception."
"Is she aware of your intimate relationship with Dr Varshavski?"
"I believe so, sir. May I ask why these questions are important? All due respect to you, sir."
"Cristine seems to have some sort of flirtatious agenda for Dr Varshavski. I should not be revealing this but she was the one who made today's report. As silly as this might seem, jealousy is a perfectly fitting motive for Cristine to make a false claim. She has made similar reports towards other female co-workers who have communicated with Dr Varshavski, I had a gut feeling this was another attempt to remove other... competitors? It's rather pathetic actually." He chuckled.
"Long story short, Miss Porter, I am certain that you and Dr Varshavski would not perform such action at work. You are both professional and dare I say, excellent members of this hospital's staff. Regardless of how your intimate relationship goes outside of work, I truly do believe you do not let that fail your professionalism."
"Thank you, sir. That is very kind of you." I smiled.
"I will have a meeting with Cristine in regards to her behaviour, I am quite fed up with her ridiculous acts of envy. Should she make any more flirtatious remarks toward you, Mikhail, please do come and see me as soon as you can."
"I will, sir. Thank you so much." Mike nodded his head and smiled.
"Thank you both for co-operating so very well. I understand both of you have finished for the day. Apologies for keeping you behind, you can go home."
"Thank you, sir. We shall see you tomorrow." Mike said with a smile, shaking his hand before opening the door, waiting for me to walk through the frame.
"After you, Miss Porter." Mike smiled, gesturing to the open door. I heard the director chuckle lightly at Mike's gentlemanly act.
"Thank you, Doctor." I giggled lightly as I strolled out of the room. Mike followed me out and closed the door behind him.
