Forever: France x Reader

You smiled softly, gathering papers and small, greatly used pencils. You put them in a small leather bag, handing it to your best friend, Francis. He patted your head, one of his heartwarming smiles on his face.

"Ah, thank you _____~ You are such a big help to me" He mused out, hefting the bag over his shoulder. He was off to school, yet you weren't allowed to go with him since women weren't allowed to go to school.

You waved goodbye to him as he walked away, wishing he didn't have to go to school. You patiently waited for his return, accidentally falling asleep at your little waiting spot.

Francis found you asleep on the steps leading up to his house and he chuckled softly to himself, gently shaking your small frame and waking you up. "_____~ It must not be very comfy sleeping on stone, oui~? Anyways, I am home from school~" he said softly, watching you sit up and fix your skirts.

You yawned and rubbed the sleep from your eyes, getting up and giving Francis a big hug. Walking with him into his house, he started talking about his day at school with you, and also about the new and very popular British playwright, William Shakespeare. He promised you that he'd bring you to a showing of Hamlet whenever he had a break from school. You laughed and smiled with him, enjoying his company.

The two of you have known each other since you were both barely walking. Your father was an ingenious inventor who sparked an interest with Francis's father, the king. Ever since then your father would always bring you with him, so you could have someone to play with. Francis and yourself became best friends almost instantly, doing almost everything together. His father even said he wouldn't be surprised if you were going to be the new princess once Francis was ready to wed. Even though the king normally didn't like the peasants of Paris, he made an exception with your small family.

You watched him do his homework, resting your chin on his shoulder as he wrote, his beautiful handwriting keeping you enticed in his work. He focused on his work, only smiling at you every once in a while. He was just a bit too busy working on his maths and astronomy.

Once he was done, he grabbed your hand and brought you out of his house, bringing you out to the beautiful Parisian countryside. There, the two of you just relaxed, laying next to each other as the clouds floated by.

"Francis? Promise me you'll never leave me to be with someone else? I don't want to lose you..." You mumbled out quietly, looking over at him. He looked back at you and smiled, his small beard stubble glinting in the sun.

"I'll be with you forever, _____. I'd never leave you for someone else." He reassured you, gently holding your hand. You sighed in relief and just laid with him there for the rest of the day, enjoying each other's company.

The next day, you didn't meet him at the steps to his house like normal, and became worried. Luckily, today was Sunday so he didn't have school. He rushed to your house, hoping that you were ok. He burst into your house, an obvious look of worry on his face. You dad brought him up to your room, where you were laying on your bed, deathly pale.

"She caught the plague last night, while throwing out the chamber pots..." Your father quietly explained, not being too loud since you were asleep. Francis looked so devastated once he heard that. He knew that the plague had already taken so many lives, but why must one of them be his _____? He walked up to your sleeping form, tears forming in the corner of his sapphire blue eyes.

You felt someone grab your hand, waking you up. You opened your eyes slowly, a bit groggy from sleep and also from you being sick.

"Francis?...." You whispered out, surprised that he was at your bedside. He smiled softly and layed a kiss upon the back of your hand. He didn't say anything, though.

He visited you every day until the one fateful day you gave your last breath and died. Instead of your body being burned like all of the other plague victims, he had a funeral procession for you. He was so sad that you were gone, but was at least glad that you died happy. You were buried with royalty, since that's where he requested that you were buried.

He visited your grave every month, giving your grave new, beautiful, roses every time he visited. Soon, though, he started visiting less and less, only because he was getting busier and busied with his role of being a country. After a while, he ended up not visiting your grave at all, being swamped with work. All of that work ended up making him forget about you, sadly.

It was present-day Paris, and France was trying to get a graveyard cleared so he could put some new buildings. He knew that the graveyard was the burial grounds of a lot of French royalty, so he decided to look over the tombstones one more time. His eyes scanned over the faded, weather beaten graves until his eyes rested on a name that sounded eerily familiar. He crouched down in front of the gravestone, noticing that there were two beautiful roses growing in front of the the stone. He gently moved the roses aside and ran his finger over the groove of the letters, tears slowly coming to his eyes.

"Oh _____.... How could I have forgotten about you for so long..." he quietly said, wiping the tears from his face. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Matthew, a slightly worried look on his face.

"Francis? Are you ok? why are you crying?" The Canadian asked, wondering what made his former caretaker so teary all of a sudden.

"Oh, it's nothing Matthew.... It's just that this girl buried here... I loved her. I loved her with all of my heart yet she was taken from me..." He replied, resting his hand on the soil and letting his tears fall down to the earth.
