It just had to be Piper. Actually, I'm kind of relieved. Charmspeaking me into whacking myself in the head a good thirty times was better than whatever Annabeth would have done if she'd trusted me to protect Percy and I was unconscious when she came back. On second thought, thank the gods it was Piper.
Clary looked terrified. I'd never seen Piper lose her temper, but this was an exception. She didn't yell, but her voice sounded so mad and so scary, that if she'd been talking to me, I probably would have ran. Then again, with the amount of charmspeak that I'm sure was leaking into her voice, it probably would've been impossible.
If Piper still had her cornucopia, I imagine she would have assaulted Clary with hams. That might have made this situation slightly funny.
"I trusted you," Piper chastised. "And you kidnapped my friend. You kidnapped him. And you knocked out the other one. I can't believe you."
"Piper, I'm sorry. I didn't know that they'd take him, but he was injured-"
Pipes cut her off with an icy glare. "And that makes it BETTER?" Piper actually yelled. I was freaking terrified.
I rubbed my cheek and winced. I'm glad the two of them were too busy arguing to notice. I would have preferred an angry Katie over this, which was totally saying something. Mental note to self: never kidnap Percy as part of a prank.
"Where is he, anyway?" I asked.
The air shimmered behind Clary and Percy appeared, two black wings sprouting into the bottom of the IM. My eyes widened, and Clary began to turn.
"Look at me," Piper demanded, but it sounded like her voice had lost its anger. She tried again. "Look at me."
To our relief, Clary listened. Behind her, Percy mouthed be back soon and swept his hand through the Iris Message. I relaxed slightly. Piper would probably be a little less murderous now that she knew he was safe. I still think Perpiper should totally be a thing.
"I'm sorry, Piper. I honestly thought he'd be fine." Clary paled, probably realizing her bad choice of words. "I mean- he'll be fine. They won't hurt him. I'm absolutely sure. He'll get better."
"He better," Piper responded coolly with a hard stare. "Come on, Connor."
The two of us walked inside without a word, leaving Clary staring at the dirt. Piper didn't even say anything to me as she went to drama and I went upstairs to biology. I wondered if she'd be acting different if it had been Jason who was kidnapped.
Without Percy, bio was boring. That, and there was nobody to stop me from annoying the teacher. When I replaced the ink in her pens with with neon pink glitter, let's just say she was far from impressed. But she didn't know it was me, so I survived.
In that moment, I half expected Percy to walk in and mimic the chastising the teacher gave him and then look innocent when when she turned around. But he didn't. What was he doing? What could possibly be taking him that long?
When gym rolled around, Percy still hadn't shown up. I took a seat beside Peter who was rather quiet. On my other side sat Marina and then Clary who I couldn't even look at. Did they take Percy to China or something?
Piper walked in talking to a brown-haired boy who I vaguely recognized. The two of them sat on the other side of Peter. Apparently Piper was still giving me the silent treatment.
I was quietly chatting with Marina when somebody stood in front of me. I looked up, expecting to see Percy, but instead found the sassiest version of blond superman.
"Is he here?" Jace asked. The question was directed at Clary.
"Is who here?" I interrupted.
Jace ignored me, but Simon, who was standing beside him, gave me a look that told me what I needed to know. They were looking for Percy.
